I mean everybody here obviously likes the music of Slowdive...noone is saying that the music is/isnt valuable because of Rachel's looks... Why must everyone take everything so seriously? I mean I could care less if anyone wants to talk about how cute Rachel is, whatever.... Get a sense of humor, lighten up, and have fun with this list while meeting others with a similar taste in music... that's what this thing is all about right? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Mar 1998 13:55:58 -0500 (EST) From: Michael Gilham Subject: Re: fawning over Rachel [the Rachel Papers] :-) Since you included some bits of my post w/ yours - which I generally am in full agreement with - I'm assuming you're using my prose as an example of your argument. If the above is the case I must, politely, and emphatically, object. Please __remember__ : my post was in defense of Rachel being slagged off as "old looking" - the writer's (sorry I forget who this was & don't have time to try to figure out) point being that she was, to some degree, less attractive than in the past ... I should have been more clear in my objection to what he wrote; but, I certainly DID think that the mentioning of that sort of thing in here was rubbish! ... But, you see, since IT WAS done; I couldn't help but voice my disagreement ... What was written in the the original reference only dealt w/ her outward features: ostensibly treating her as some sort of object ... Remember, whilst I was honest about my attraction to her I wrote she seemed like a "lovely *person*." Admittedly, I find her outwardly attractive, yet, as I'm sure one could see from what I wrote, her appearance was only a part of why I was "taken" by her ... I see beautiful women most every day. That is something _completely_ different than what I got on about in the course of making my objections to what Daniel posted from his "friend?"... I apologise for expressing my personal experience and feelings here on the list. It would have never happened had I not been incited by the discussed post! If you think I'm the kind to go about talking about "how hot girls are", etc.; well, please recall, that my thoughts on Rachel - stemming from seeing her and Neil and the other guitar player at an in-store - had not been communicated before, to anyone - EVER .... Call me crazy, but it didn't seem that wrong to let them be known as a foil to the derisive remarks made by the one guy. Well, I had some more points to raise in re. to "Agent Cooper"'s argument; but I think this is enough for now; since this is going to the list ... Suffice to say that I do agree w/ the line of thinking he/she expresses ... yet, some [of it] is a bit reactionary ... Furthermore, I don't think it right to foster repression - even if well intended ... ...Most people are repressed enough, as it is ... I only have the EP but have been listening to it a lot lately. the singer has the kind of melodic crooning that I really love. the songs are kind of poppy but are very heartfelt, or at least I think so. i would compare that aspect of them to breathless or lowlife but i'm not saying they really sound like those bands or anything. (maybe they do a little)i'm really bad at describing things but i thought i would give it a shot. as a side note: i thought it was weird that i just joined this list yesterday and one of the first topics was the autumns because i had never heard of them until a few day ago when i stumbled upon their CD at my college radio station, i guess it's a good sign that i joined a list from which i will get relevant info to the kind of music i like, that's a very good thing. thanks. i would be interested to get suggestions from people on this list of new bands to play on my radio show, i really love slowdive/mojave 3 and have full playlists of what I play on my site (it's all text, nothing fancy.) any suggestions would be wonderful. i try not to play the same stuff but find myself coming back to slowdive, bel canto, cocteau twins, big hat, sharkboy, this mortal coil, state of grace, etc. all the time. thanks in advance. Can > anybody tell me anything about Color Filter? color filter is rad shit. he combines pop melodies and vocals with acoustic guitars, strings, etc. (organic instrumentation in general) and hip-hop beats. there's even a d'n'b track on the cd, and it fucking rocks! (or something.) but seriously, get this cd. on a blind recommendation even. it's that good. the sweet trip cd is on its way to me, can't wait. their track on little darla v8 is awesome. also in the "mbv school of d'n'b": fourhead. listee mike p doing incredible shoegazing drum 'n bass and otherwise. unprecedented. a cassette on clairecords, more coming in the near future??? junior varsity km. drum 'n bass that's from more of a pop perspective than mbv or whatnot. a tad of the aphex playfulness in there, with some gorgeous sometimes-bordering-on-twee melodies... bowery electric. at least the direction in which they're going now. their last 12", "blowup"/"electrosleep" shows them getting more into sampling, breakbeats, etc. and you just can't beat those guitars. mm. yummy. post-shoegazing electronica a la joy division? who else? can't get enough of this shit. ; ed ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Mar 1998 17:35:53 -0600 (CST) From: Jason Selby Subject: Re: February > Has anyone heard the dreampop band February? Is it any good? February is from minneapolis, mn... i've gotten to see them a couple times live -- if you have the opportunity to see them, go. Their shows are a lot of fun (lot of band/crowd interaction) and the band members are very friendly and cool. Their music is very interesting.. i'd classify it (if i have to..) as dreampop, but more emphasis on pop... the lead-singer/keyboardist and guitarist are clearly influenced by dreampop bands such as MBV and slowdive (maybe cocteau twins?), but the bassist and drummer cited punk and various other bands as influences.. makes for an interesting sound -- dreamy vocals / guitars over a more active rhythm section. Definately check them out... their web site is: www.waste.org/feb I think they have some sound clips there... jason. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Mar 1998 18:28:30 +0500 From: box-and-whiskers Subject: Re: February > Has anyone heard the dreampop band February? Is it any good? given your reaction to the autumns (whom i think are great) -- i'd say steer clear of february, as i'd categorize them as sounding similar. i like february's music well enough, but the girl who sings sounds waaay too much like natalie merchant for me to listen to them for any extended period of time. mis dos pesos, susan. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Mar 1998 19:07:17 -0600 From: Brad Nicholson Subject: Re: Sweet Trip Blissout At 06:20 PM 3/27/98 -0500, you wrote: > who else? can't get enough of this shit. Subject: Rachel Wow. There's some life left in this list after all... Rachel is not some Madonna like icon who doesn't need to be propped up every once in a while, looks-wise or otherwise. So if she does read the digest, I'm sure it will make her feel good that listees [who are probably the biggest Slowdive/Mojave 3 fans] think she is pretty or whatever. I, for one, feel that her voice is so beautiful [in its context] that it can bring one to tears or joy. The Neil/Rachel partnership is one of those things that actually is important in musique today, and I hope they understand this. Actually, I used to say that I would probably marry each one of them on the spot (ie. Slowdive members) for their pure genius alone. And yes, Neil as well. And no, I am straight. :-) This reminds me of the fact that the first time I saw pictures of any of them was on the Souvlaki cover - and I had adored them for three years before that. What they look like has nothing to do with the music they make, at least not for me. They are beautiful people - both on the in and outside. What's so upsetting about that? //Erik ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Mar 1998 15:31:49 +0100 From: Erik Soderstrom Subject: Re: autumns > While we're on the subject of cd buying, anyone who also read a review > about the band Corneilus(and how they sound like MBV/space rockish)should > disregard what they read, and not but it, it's very disappointing. You know, I *did* read a review in the morning paper today - never heard of the band before, but the name struck a chord somewhere - and you're right, they did say something about MBV in there too, which made me put it up on my "check out" list. But it isn't worth it then? Any soundclips somewhere on the web? //Erik ------------------------------ End of Avalyn Digest Vol.98 #43 ********************************
