Here's the deal. Rachel's not a model. She shouldn't be remembered for her "fine-lookin'-ness". The problem is that slowdive fans let their minds be clouded by her siren-song. If Rachel could only speak a language in which each sylable sounded like a fat man dry-heaving into a toilet, I'm sure your evaluation of her appearance would not be as favorable. Beautiful voice = physical beauty. Even if that equation WERE true (which it isn't) Rachel's appearance has, quite plainly, no relevance to the music. To be perfectly honest, I'm disappointed that SLOWDIVE, a band of such remarkable musicianship, could ever be the target of such superficial comments. Do we enjoy slowdive because of the music we hear when we listen to them, or because of the images of Rachel we see in our heads when listening to said music? If any member of the former group deserves special attention, it's Neil. He wrote all but 4 tracks of Souvlaki, and EVERY track on Just For A Day. He's the one creating everything yet the members of this list are *quickest* to make their comments when the subject matter is Rachel-centric, even (or should I say especially) when it's something outside the realm of music, e.g. Rachel's "fine-lookin'-ness", or marriage. Just further evidence that the mass of humanity has yet to evolve beyond it's lookist ways. Anyway, to recap, I'm disgusted and shame on all of you. P.S. - If you insist on responding, please don't quote this ENTIRE post... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Mar 1998 18:22:21 -0600 (CST) From: James W Weber Subject: Re: fawning over Rachel [long post] damn. right on. i was going to write something similar till i saw your post. thanks for articulating my same concerns. SOLARIUM @ Bottom of the Hill San Francisco Monday, March 30th 21 and up $3 (cheap!) Solarium's playing at the Bottom of the Hill on Monday the 30th, along with Juniper and Tsui. It's a couple of guitars, a keyboard, vox, bass, drums.... soon to be augmented with more electronics but not at this gig.... We do kind of a Mogwai-ish spacepop/instrumental/noisy/guitarscape thing, and this is only our second official gig, don't ask us how we scored Bottom of the Hill. Anyway, you should all go - the lineup looks to be as follows: Tsui - Never heard of 'em. In fact, if you have, please let me know. (The booking guy said they had a poppier Sonic Youth thing going for them) Juniper - They're great - jangly punky/poppy girl-fronted group with nice melodies and a great bouncy feel. We picked them ourselves so they're guaranteed for freshness. Solarium - That would be us. Here's a little review of our first show from a non-biased observer: > Last night (2/17) at the Cocodrie Club here in SF, I had the pleasure of > seeing the band Solarium. The song was 'Rocket Science,' but it's the thought that counts. No clue as to what kind of manuever a "'Gummo' type dance move" is. The whole show supposedly starts at 8ish....and we are slotted to go on around 10, but that could easily change so the earlier you show up the better. Anyway I hope some of you can make it.... if you think you can come, let me know so maybe we can meet up before/after and just so I have an idea of how many to expect... thanks! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Mar 1998 23:54:34 -0500 (EST) From: Michael Gilham Subject: Re: two opinions are usually better than one ... Not to jump on a feminist soapbox or anything, but why is > it that women are expected to differentiate themselves according to their > marital status, when men are just Mr. regardless of marital status? Erm, well, yes! I completely agree! It's daft for there to be title distinctions based on marital status ... so I guess I should've left it like I wanted to! Like you said it may be old fashioned/archaic, etc.. HOWEVER, in some places, older women wouldn't like it if you called them Miss/Ms., - really! Anyone from the Deep South of the USA will know that, there, they're even more particular about these sorts of things: in writing, some will insist on spelling out "Miss" when referring to an unmarried woman; and so forth ... In Northern Virginia (where I've lived all my life), one doesn't normally run into that sort of thing ... But, anyway, my use of Mrs. was in no way meant to detract from Rachel's individuality - I was just being correctly old-fashioned, I guess? And of course, she's kept her surname (at least for "business"), so using "Mrs." is a way to illustrate the fact of her marriage .... Though, once again, I agree this is unnecessary and sexist. ... But I'm certainly not sexist: if I ever get married I wouldn't want my wife to change her last name (unless she insisted) [or, for that matter, use "Mrs. :-) ]!. ...Course, I don't think I will ever need to worry 'bout that: since I don't really believe in the Marriage as an Institution ... I think IT is archaic as well!! cheers, Michael PS At one time there was a common designation given to boys and unmarried young men; which is rarely used today: Master. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Mar 1998 00:34:49 -0500 From: jvanslem Subject: .MP3 Problems I've had trouble (and so has my Mac-using friend.) dowloading the last two .mp3 files from Agent Coopers alternate site. I've heard good things about them live, so maybe they have some new more slowdivish songs now, but the stuff on the albums sounds like Tears for fears, meets Ocean blue, meets Halfstring. Don't buy it if you want really spacey guitars, it's more melodic and poppy. While we're on the subject of cd buying, anyone who also read a review about the band Corneilus(and how they sound like MBV/space rockish)should disregard what they read, and not but it, it's very disappointing. wade ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Mar 1998 09:24:33 +0000 From: "wade@tapehouse.com" Subject: February Has anyone heard the dreampop band February? Hey all-> Okay, so some people got upset about the fact some listees are "obsessing" over certain band members' looks....sorry that I started all that. I just thought it was an interesting point that my friend thought Rachel looked "old" and non-crushworthy anymore, when in fact plenty of listees and fans think that she is still nice looking (better choice of verbage than "fine-lookin'??). Anyhow, if say my friend was a girl and said the exact same things about Neil, I'm sure I still would have posted with exactly the same attitude...point is that no one means any harm in any of this I'm sure, and I wouldn't call anyone here obsessive. I mean nobody has said "ohmigodohmigodohmigod Rachel is HOTTTT!!!!" or anything! So let's all get a grip and drop this poo-poo... Slowdive's music is amazing. Period. Indeed, the looks have NOTHING to do with the music. However, as one person posted, "if Rachel's voice sounded like a fat man dry-heaving into a toilet, I'm sure your evaluation of her appearance would not be as favorable"....I find something wrong with this statement. There are plenty of women in rock that I find attractive, but I find their music attrocious. Conversely, some women have amazing voices, but sure as hell aren't very attractive. I won't toss out any examples so as not to offend anyone who might not want to hear about how pretty/ugly anyone in music is...
