This 422-page book ($19.95) has in-depth profiles of sixty of the most interesting overlooked cult rock artists of all time, in all cases including first-hand interview material with the artists themselves and/or their close associates. The book also includes a 12-song, 45-minute CD with rare tracks by a dozen of the acts covered in the volume. The text is accompanied by 90 photos and reviews of the most essential recordings by each artist. Too many rock books stress their subjects' idiosyncrasies and malfunctions to such an extent that you wonder how they ever made a record. Richie Unterberger always keeps the artists' work in the forefront." -- Ira Kaplan, singer/guitarist, Yo La Tengo "I learned quite a bit about bands of which I was a fanatic and even more about others which I had never heard before. Richie Unterberger has done his best to demonstrate that the best and most anachronistic music often outlives the most trendy or commercial. Great book...It made for two great days of van reading and travel denial." --Steve Wynn, singer/guitarist, Dream Syndicate "Chances are, unless you are a hardcore rock aficionado, you've never heard of most of the 'unknown legends' that make up the cast of Richie Unterberger's characters...And yet, for seekers with a taste for the mongrel, each performer in this rogue's gallery is intuitively connected to the instinct for art which helps define our humane sociopathy, beyond the commerce and formats and definitions with which we design our musical personalities. They'll renew your faith in the idiosyncratic as a way of life, performance as psychodrama, career as parable, the unbeaten path to the doorway and the knock that never comes. Until that day when they wake up and find they've become legend." -- from the foreword by Lenny Kaye, guitarist from the Patti Smith Group; producer for Soul Asylum, Kristin Hersh, Suzanne Vega On the accompanying CD: tracks by John's Children, the Music Machine, the Rising Storm, the Deviants, Savage Rose, Penelope Houston, Aisha Kandisha, the Cleaners From Venus, Merrell Fankhauser & Fapardokly, the Outsiders, the Mystic Tide, and Savage Republic. I was wondering if anyone could tell me about the Cardigans Singles Box Vol 1 -- the one with their 5 singles from their first two albums. The entire box only costs $34 USD. And I've talked to a Danish guy who tells me he's seen it even *cheaper*: he said he'd seen it for both 189 and 199 SEK. I can't see how this is possible, cosidering how expensive CD's are in Sweden. So, having never seen the box, I wonder about the quality. Are the covers to the CD's the original covers, or some generic (read: cheap) design? Is the package nice, or shoddy? Opinions?? I really want to hear those singles, and buying this box seems like a quick, inespensive way to do so, but I wanted to get an idea of what I'd be getting. Is it worth it to stick it out and try to find the original singles? Let me know what you think...tack! Chris -- forsberg@charm.net Chris Forsberg ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Jul 1998 00:12:30 -0700 From: xander@sirius.com Subject: Re: Cardigans box set -- help requested! Indeed, I picked up the box for 179 SEK in Umea, thanks to the fact that the shop gave a 10% student discount for that ISIC card I was carrying. The singles all appear to be the originals to me (but would I know?), except that the version of "Rise & Shine" included is the UK version - which has the same artwork as the Scandinavian issue of "Hey! Get out of my way" (also included in the box). Which seems pretty lame, if you ask me. As far as the box itself goes, it's nothing particularly attractive: white corrugated cardboard with blue/green (I can't tell in this light) text. Of course, I've seen the boxes (there's a vol. 2 as you probably know) going for $40 or so in Berkeley, so $34 isn't the worst. As to the music, well, I haven't played it more than a few times...I think that I wanted it more a couple years ago...these things happen. I can remember visiting the Dolores office here in Gothenburg the day that Isse (the boss) received a tape with the new Starmarket demo. A demo he said the band were so completely unhappy with that they didn't even want to give it to Isse. They all thought it was way too soft, wimpy and poppy.I had a listen to it and to me it sounded just marvellous and I know Isse thought so to. On the tape were three brilliant poptunes, not at all cheeky or happy, rather a bit melancholic and really wonderful. Everyone who heard the tape that day really thought it was the best they ever heard from the band an I sure agree. But, since the band themselves obviously don't want to sound like this, they had a hard time coping with the fact that the record-company found it great. A pretty sad story and I'm not taking sides. In fact, I understand both sides. Just hope that something good somes out of this for Starmarket.
