A year ago I bought a Wuhling ep ("speed") from a "reaback" just because City Slang was the label, the ep was brilliant, but I didn't know anything about the band 'til you told me, thanks! You haven't an idea what the danish third member is doing nowadays? Or what happened after wuhling? Micke following the break-up of 18th dye two of the members (heike radeker and frank neumeier) went on and formed another three piece called wuhling together with anne rolf (former member of caspar brotzmann massaker). wuhling only managed to record one album before splitting up shortly after its release. the album was called "extra 6" and can still be found from touch and go records. it's a pretty good album in the vein of 18th dye, maybe a bit less sharp-edged and repetitive. per ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Apr 1998 14:10:10 +0000 From: "johanna.hillgren" Subject: Re: Silverbullit - Clearspot? Thanks to Erik's raving concert review a while ago, I just went out and bought it. I'd say they sound a bit like Live on "Throwing Copper" and maybe a bit like Smashing Pumpkins too (?), but I'm not sure if other people would agree with me as I'm not the best person around to describe music! If you like hard guitar based rock with lovely melodies, then yes, Motorpsycho is probably something for you. But, WHY, WHY did they release the album the way they did? First of all, the shitty cardboard sleeve. The sheer thought of releasing a double CD album in a cardboard sleeve is absurd! Then we have those silly envelopes that the CDs themselves are packed in... And why release it on *two* CDs? There are only 14 tracks, of which at least eight are at least one minute too long. They could easily have squeezed them in on one CD if they just wanted to. But I suppose that's the charm about them; they really don't want to become a commercially successful band, do they? > > Robert, Motorpsycho Emptiness, like Does that mean I'm not the only Manics fan on the list? Hi, I guess I should write some about Umea Open. The definite highlight was Teenage Fanclub, they were surprisingly good despite that their hair has gotten shorter and gray. They played for one hour, including older songs like "Everything Flows" and "Star Sign". Bear Quartet played even more new songs than during the show one week before in Lulea. Since Bjorn Olsson played 2nd guitar, Matti could concentrate on singing, which made it all much better. It was all good until the end of the show where Bjorn Olsson's amp broke down. After that everything fell apart and when Peter N. broke a string it was over. Caesar's Palace were good during the first 4-5 songs or so, after that the quality of the songs really declined. Has anyone heard their very first 7"? It sucks so bad, especially compared to the newer songs. Komeda were good, a few songs kind of bored me, but most of them were much better than expected. Not that I will rush out and buy their albums anyway, but... Dr. Kosmos' "rock opera" StjarnJerry (Star Jerry) was incredibly good. Some songs reminded me of the Seeds' two-chord stomp, but played with in an 80s synth pop style. The bigscreen behind the band showed 60-70s sociopolitical propaganda films about mobbing, hash smoking and what not. Unfortunately I missed the beginning of it because I had to stand in line for some stupid reason. I thought that having your ticket bought in advance would mean not having to engage in every swede's fave hobby. The only other complaint I have is that two of the stages were too close to each other, which ruined the Loosegoats + Ward J show a bit, since some loud rock was playing at the other stage at the same time. The countryish Loosegoats + Ward J show was a bit boring though, luckily I found a sofa to sit down in. Other than that, the techno dance floor all night baby yeah had some hip DJs playing some quite interesting music, especially for me who doesn't listen to techno that much. Hab (Dot/NONS) played at one of the "normal" stages, and I must say that it was a pretty nice first encounter with his music. And ... well, I was pretty excited to find a nice reissue of Freak Scene's "Psychedelic Psoul" LP at Garageland Records. Isn't it strange that there's decent record stores in Umea, but none in Lulea, despite that Umea is only about 50% bigger? I think I managed to set a new personal festival record in beer drinking too, I had the enormous amount of one (1) Lapin Kulta during the whole weekened. It must be that straight edge environment that has a bad influence on me. May the circle remain unbroken, Petter ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Apr 1998 19:44:54 +0200 From: Erik Soderstrom Subject: Re: Silverbullit - Clearspot? I'm wasn't sure about the Pumpkins reference at first, but now that I come to think of it - yes, some of the whining guitars on the album can be said to have a likeness to Smashing Pumpkins but overall I'd say they are close to a drone version of a Monster Magnet/Mother Love Bone/Temple of The Dog combo. Now how does that sound? Well, like Motorpsycho probably. ;-) //Erik ------------------------------ End of Scandinavian Indie Digest Vol.98 #35 ********************************************
