The party will be held at Platens in Linkoping. I am not sure if one has to be invited to be allowed in, but it might be the case, I guess. Anyone interested could contact their label, L-Style, for more information at: lstyle@ebox.tninet.se The party will start at 8 in the evening. The band will play live at about 9 and before that there will, hopefully, be a chance to watch their new video. I have not heard any of the songs from the new album but I have heard rumours that the sound is somewhat different from the "Avoiding ground loops" ep and that there will be a cover version of a BUILT TO SPILL song (dont know which one) on the album. /Micke ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 15:43:00 -0000 From: "Abbott, Daniel, ABBOTTD7" Subject: hooRAY! That is one of the explanation to why the gig was cancelled. They have been in Stockholm for quite some time now. Two weekends ago SOOL frontman Ebbot Lundberg teamed up with his old UCP mate Henrik Rylander, Jean Louis Huhta (Lucky People Center), and Leif & Kent from the great performance group The Sons Of God, for a wild show in the basement of restaurant Prinsen. This performance included dark electro- pulses from analogue tone generators, hammering on a metal and springs, and the infernal noise of a grinder (vinkelslip) pressed towards a metal board... sparks were flying all over the place. Imagine Blixa Bargeld wrestling with Merzbow in a flood of lava... and you're close to the truth. Needless to say, it was some pretty amazing stuff there. Btw, what is it with Gothenburg, since all great rockers from there get so obese... first Freddie Wadling, and now Ebbot. Years before that Jussi used to sing in Pirkanpojat - the grooviest boys choir in whole Finland. Knowing his voice quite well (spent many rehearsals sitting next to him) I was a bit shocked the first time I heard their first (or was it second?) single because I barely recognized his voice. When the album, "Ingrid", came out the recording and mixing was much better and it was even enjoyable to hear Jussi singing duet with himself. >got their name from a transvestite who >hanged at Warhol's factory back in the days... Also still remember the exact day in my early teens when Jussi showed me a picture of a funny album cover. It had a banana or something on the white backround... Maria's voice is still "ontop" of the music, as it was on the EP and not "with" the music, which is as disturbing as it was before. Other than that it's great. Kind of like a Juliana Hatfield Tree but without Juliana. "Dying To Tell Her" is _very_ similar to both an early song by miss Hatfield and a song by Backfish (the one on the Emmaboda Festival 97 compilation)... I can see why Ken chose to produce both bands... (on a side-note - Ken also wanted to produce Swedish band "Space Age Baby Jane"... - and someone from Posies said on the radio the other night they might as well move here as they had more fun here than at home... ha ha) > and that there will be a cover version of a BUILT TO SPILL song > (dont know which one) on the album. Katy Penny (vocals, bass) has been interviewed on the morning and evening radio in Norway the last week, their single "Postscript To Her Letter" has received airplay on National Radio in both Sweden and Norway with following good reviews in magazines and papers (see examples below). Now they're waiting for the album reviews to drop in, and while they're doing that, they celebrate with another release party - this time in their home town Bergen in Norway on March 21st at Hulen. On March 25th they play in Bo i Telemark at venue Kroa. Single of the Week in Popoga: http://www.algonet.se/~d89671/singlar98w11.html Review in Magazine Groove: Norwegian-British Twigs with singer and front person Katy Penny are playing pop close to the vein of The Wedding Present and Sonic Youth. Postscript To Her Letter has, even though it does not present anything new, a chance to be a smaller radio hit. A frail verse and then the fat layer of guitars kick in. Best of the songs on the single is To Way Muzzle with wriggling Sonic Youth guitars and playful passages that end in an abyss. The opening band was IOTA, a local band very much in the style of Tortoise. Instrumental post-rock?, with Rhodes, Xilophone, bass, guitar, drums, and some strange noises coming from nowhere. Good tunes, but a bit repetitive at the end. Not bad at all. The main act was Mogwai... and they were simply gorgeous. It was an almost completely instrumental set, but their absolute control over songs was simply perfect... evolving from spaced-out rythm-less guitar riffs with loads of delays, to huge noise walls... Really intense and inspiring. In some parts of their set they were really relaxed, sitting on the floor of the stage, and playing beautiful guitar melodies... and in other, I just couldn't believe how much noise can be achieved with 2 guitars, a bass and a drummer. (Ah! and a Xilophone again... fetish instrument for the post-rock hordes?). I heard their CD with remixes, and I thought it was really good... but live they are sublime!!!! My recomendation is that all those listies on the more noisy side of life should go and check this band playing live.
