DANIEL ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Feb 1998 13:35:26 +0100 From: j.sundstrom@ekuc.se (Jan Sundstrom) Subject: GTM, Pimms, Dr Kosmos Gig report! I went to see Grand tone Music and the rest at Tanto this tuesday. OK, so this was a sponsored event by Kulturhuvudstadsaret, and about one zillion of indiekids wanted to pay 10 SEK to see these bands. I went there at 20.00 and the little lada called tantogarden was FULL: indiekids hanging out fron the windows, pouring out from the chimney, it looked like a train in India. And about 2-300 who lined up outside, with no chance of getting in. So I was on the list, got in and just saw the last 3 songs by the opening act, Pimms. Now, they were kinda typical for the tendency of always picking up the latest popular trends: Pimms was like a Radiohead cover band, they copied the sound, the instruments, the style of the singer, the awkwardness, everything. The only difference is that they're trying to play their own songs. I found myself guessing "which RH song are they trying to imitate now? - there was the acoustic guitar on fake Plastic Trees, now came the crunchy guitar/bass from Creep, the singer went falsetto a la Paranoid Android (*ouch, that part was just too pathetic*), whining like High and Dry. You get the point. Not that they were bad, but Radiohead makes it just so much better, why should i waste my time listening to second rate wannabees? OK, it wasn't 100 % RH imitation. When he didn't sound like Thom Yorke, the singer went "Jocke Berg" from Kent. Nuff said. GTM were second out. Nothing much had changed since i saw them at Prinsen last year. All songs were kinda mellow, although intense. If I had been in the right mood, I would have cried tears. "Sad songs say so much", you know. I must say I miss the rockier side of Salt, GTM would never play songs like God Damn Carneval, which is a shame, really. OK, these ballads are fine, but everything is so soft and sentimental... The hammond organ was stripped of it's back, so you could see all the mechanics inside, that looked pretty cool. BTW, the drummer was wearing a Baxter t-shirt. Anyone heard anything with them yet??? Doktor Kosmos. OK, these people are my friends. Heck, me and Catti Larson were classmates for six years! I know all the Dr K guys from my gymnaisum years in Gavle. Still, I'm having a hard time trying to enjoy their music. Sorry, but it's just not my style. Just like Di Leva was in the beginning, to "manieristic", anxious to so strange and weird. I can stand some of the songs on record, but seeing them on stage was just too much, i left after two songs. Sorry Catti! :-/ Jan Sundstrom ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Feb 1998 15:17:35 +0200 (EET) From: Samhain Subject: Re: Finnish up-to-date music !!??
