I saw Freewheel live two days ago and they were completely lovely. Ok, maybe 1-2 songs were a bit dull, but the rest is quite charming pop music. Ok, the singer is originally from Akarp which is pretty much right between Malmo and Lund and he has lived as much in Malmo as in Lund. The bassplayer is definitely from Malmo and the rest of them are from Stockholm. By the way, I think the singer sings great - the lyrics I am not that into. What I am trying to say is that Freewheel is a really good band and that they dont deserve those harsh words. And just out of interest: how can you hear when a band is from Lund? Just curious? Because I thought so too before, but nowadays that scene is pretty much gone. Loosegoats, Sideshow Bob, Satanic Surfers, Craftworld, Langhorns, Favorita, Chunks, In A Spring are all bands that dont sound much like they are from Lund, do they? What bands of today in Lund sound like they are from Lund? Maybe Super Eight Group, Soul Ryders, Thirdimension (recently signed to Telegram), but I am not even sure that they are typically Lundish. So tell me what is. Jan Sundstrom wrote: > But i never heard of Club 8. One hit wonder, or am > i just being ignorant? Neither I guess. Club 8 dont get that much attention in Sweden, but they are quite huge in the southern parts of Europe. Our college radio show TANDEM had the Club 8-songwriter Johan Angergard as guest last week and he said that Club 8 were out looking for a new label, while his other band Acid House Kings were about to release an album in the US. Those two times I have seen Loosegoats play unplugged is probably two of the best shows I have ever seen a swedish band do. Their latest single "Disdialogic" gave a hint on what to come from Loosegoats, because the b-sides were, in my opinion, the best things they have done so far (if you forget about one of the songs there). So if you are in the neighbourhood, I definitely think you should see this gig. Take care! This may sound a bit hilarious and ridiculous, but to me Lund is a "musical state of mind". Bands from Lund are so often so "right". A lot of them are 90% style, music and fashion, and 10% fresh musical ideas. Bands like Loosegoats, Sideshow bob and the Satanic surfers are good examples. How "new" is their music? They are just copys, both musically and fashionably of their own favourites. Not to mention Super Eight group and the other two(huuu....). Maybe Favorita tries to do something of thier own. I'm not sure if they are "huge" in southern Europe, but it's true that all the Scandinavian "twee" bands are much better appreciated outside of Scandinavia. It's just appalling to see that the Club 8 album is probably still consistently in the "Tweenet Charts" (a monthly poll where you can vote for your favorite albums at the Tweenet site) after being out since 1996 (? - can't check because I loaned the disc out last night). BTW, the 7" which preceded the album is now sold out at the label, and it's definitely worth having (I'd say that there are only 4 songs on the album which are as good as the three on the 7"), so if you see it, consider yourselves warned. > Our college radio show > TANDEM had the Club 8-songwriter Johan Angergard as guest last week and he > said that Club 8 were out looking for a new label, while his other band > Acid House Kings were about to release an album in the US. I think the > label was called Shelflife. I'm guessing that this will be the album which was released on Harmony a few months ago in Japan? It's called Advantage and I think it's by far the best thing AHK have done. The production is a huge leap beyond bedroom fidelity, and the result is much richer, organic, and at times much more (effectively!) melancholy than I would have previously expected. They've got a female singer now, who does the lead vocals on 3 or so of the tracks, and her voice is gorgeous. As if that weren't enough, there's also a tiny wooden clothespin trapped inside the CD's plastic case. And while we're on the topic of under-appreciated wimpy pop bands, may I also recommend Den Baron? I just got this wonderful 7" on the Apricot label (Germany, but I understand that the artist - it's just one guy - is Swedish). Happy/sad guitar and bedroom keyboard stuff. The last song is absolutely lovely and features one of the best titles I've read in ages: "I can see the flowers in the garden through the window but I can't touch them".
