As for nice studios to record in I can warmly recommend Helikopter in Gothenburg (tel office 031 125044, studio 031-126255). They've got an excellent analogue 24-track, and the sound of the studio is brilliant, you just put up the mikes, record and what comes out of the speakers has a warm, round feel to it. It's run by Sven Jansson, a very cool guy, with an alert, active mind and lots of production ideas, in fact he used to play keyboards for the earlier mentioned Lars Hollmer. And the prices are very reasonable, considering what you get. Yes and they were great, this a band that are better live than on record, (the records are also great) it was real 1977, punk rock, with one very sexy guitar player. it made a nice change seeing a french band. There was two support bands, Dee Rangers & goners (martin from Savage mag, his new band) but I'm sad to say I missed both support bands. I'm lousy at giving reviews, so lets hope someone else send one in!! another band to check out are the No Talents (also from France) Trevor Check out: www.wineasy.se/beluga -------------------------------- Date: Wed, 27 Aug 1997 23:50:28 +0300 (EET DST) From: Timo Riitamaa Subject: Aavikko So... anybody wouldn't happen to have a pre-tape of the new Aavikko full-lenght "Derek", and would be willing to tell us poor rock nerds what's it all about? !!!!: Duplo's 1st, the most amazing, ass kicking, what your mother always warned you about 7" "Time To Fight, Time To Kill!" this has got to be the best thing since Larry & The Lefthanded's "Dance Me Me" MCD (oh, that was just a few weeks ago...) but anyway, a man or woman can only take so much of Pavement (and believe me i have) before you need to *rawk*. and here, totally objectively speaking, is something that rocks. stop spending obscene amounts of money on faux-vintage clothing, find the real stuff, throw the CD player out of the window, and become an aural pervert. Popwatch rocks. -Timo -------------------------------- Date: Wed, 27 Aug 1997 22:53:43 +0200 (MET DST) From: Ola Lundkvist Subject: Wellmeant When I wanted to buy a demo from Wellmeant in Emmaboda, they promised to send me one since they hadn't brought any. Yesterday it finally arrived. Except that it wasn't a demo - it was their brand new CD-single! According to Sin's upcoming record releases, it is supposed to be out tomorrow. The CD has four songs: 'Planet of blue', 'Transparent Feedback', 'Number one' and 'Audionautic highway'. 'Number one' was the song that was on the Emmaboda compilation. Apart from that I've only heard one song with Wellmeant before, and that was 'Milou', on the 'A chance to shine' compilation. I think that the progression from 'Milou' to these new songs are huge. That probably has a lot to do with their new synth/organ player (arp omni & farfisa) - who adds a sound I'm very fond of. They are also using more effects now, which I like better than their more clean-cut sound on 'Milou'. Since Wellmeant's sound have been mentioned here before, I won't try to describe that any further. I'm not good at writing reviews but here's my first impressions (after listening to the CD five times): 'Planet of blue', is a wonderful pop song. Somewhat softer and cuter than 'Number one'. I can't help to think that this is how Cardigans could have sounded if they were any good(*). And then, this is the track that appeals least to me... 'Transparent feedback' is somewhat unconventional. It begins like a pop song with a slight Jamaica feeling rhythm. Then it changes into a harsher sound with disted song. That goes into some indie-pop style riffs with 'nanana' backing vocals, and the whole thing ends with an organ excercise... Well, sounds weird, and it is - but somehow they have tried to put about everything good they could come up with into one song, and they succeeded! Somewhat funny with a song title that sounds like a Stereolab (who do like to repeat the same riffs for 15 minutes) song, but changes phase every 45 seconds. The name 'Number one' is of course not a coincidence - it is a number one hit! One of those songs that the repeat button was meant for. Well, I hope that most of those still reading have heard this song already - if you haven't I could only say that this song alone makes this record worth buying. The final track, 'Audionautic highway', is a slow psychadelic one. Works very well with the wonderful vocals. I'll let you imagine yourself how it sounds. Or you could walk down your local record store and buy it. Finally another piece of happy news: According to GP, Yo La Tengo will play at Underground, Göteborg, the 15:th of November. I don't know about other Scandinavian dates, but it seems unlikely not to play a few more venues. /Ola -- (*) "If you have ever heard artists like Sundays, Stina Nordenstam or Wellmeant - you won't want to listen to Cardigans ever again." --------------------------------- Date: Fri, 29 Aug 1997 18:51:59 +0200 From: Micke Rehnstrom Subject: Dead Cool tape Just notifying that I received Trevor's "Dead Cool" tape in my mailbox today. Proudly Presents Gentle Tuesday 'What My Sister Wants' b/w 'P.S' (Wonder 002) Gentle Tuesday who started as a band 3 years ago are back with a new fresh vinyl single, last year they released 'Gentle Tuesday e.p' (CD5, Dorian 03), now long gone and sold out. Gentle Tuesday directly found a way to reach out with their unique style of Swedish pop music, and now rivals are forever trying to analyse and probe the secret of the success. But Gentle Tuesday modestly claims that there is no secret. They simply compose songs with a strong melody line and then arranges them so that nothing gets in the way of the melody. Gentle Tuesday believes that everyone, irrespective of which country they live in, will always respond to a good tune especially if it is well played and the tempo is right. Gentle Tuesday is hundred per cent sincere about their music, they really enjoy a good melody. Thus, Gentle Tuesday gets as much fun out of making their songs as many followers do out of listening to them. This single will give you a majestic brass sound and crisply moving rhythm in 'What My Sister Wants' and a more briskly driven pop in 'P.S' All you need is a good record player system, a cool drink and a cozy armchair. Gentle Tuesday will then take care of everything else, you will be given an attractive and colourful mixture of the Swedish breeze and twee pop. The spontaneous communication which exists between the singer Totte and the Band, Bopping Brass Inc, is a remarkably lovely and they together manages to transcend it´s blindingly obvious influences just by being so damned good. These 2 songs are brilliant, particularly I mostly enjoy the hedonistic atmosphere and those adorable vocals flying over the trumpets. Gentle Tuesday's approach is an honest one and 'What My Sister Wants' is their best single up to this point. Alfons Popangelov. The new single will be released 10/9 and available through Border Music and your favourite mailorder services. totte.pop@swipnet.se (Totte Pop) -------------------------------- Date: 31 Aug 1997 19:59:35 +0200 From: Robert Cumming Subject: Mopeds??? "Lizard", the most unbelievable radio hit in the history of swedish radio (if you ask me), is from that EP. I have not heard all the songs from that record but those I have heard are quite OK, perhaps more fun than good though (I think that "Lizard" sounds quite much like FLAMING LIPS but that is not completely true for a couple of other songs I have heard with them). They are a quite nice live band too, I have seen them twice (Herrgarn, when they toured with two other Vibrafon bands, and the Hultsfred Festival). Two of the guys in the band also appear on stage, playing trumpet and trombone (I think, cannot remember it clearly), when EGGSTONE performs live. /Micke, enjoying the Ceilidh compilation "Singles and vinyls" ------------------------------- Date: Sun, 31 Aug 1997 13:00:14 -0700 From: xander@sirius.com (minigo & xander) Subject: Re: Mopeds??? The event takes place at the Semifinaali venue and the tickets should be around 20 FIM or so. It will be a special night in a number of ways: Super are celebrating the release of their new "Ticket" EP, released on the Japanese label Escalator and, as some might already know, this is the debut gig for Cessna in Finland. So if you're in the neighbourhood, this is your chance to see some good indiepop action! And please come up and say hi; I'll be the guy on the stage with the red instrument. Also, I'd like to mention that if you are desperate to get hold of the Cessna releases "Holiday on Ice" 7" EP and "Bordeaux" double 3" cd, we have some copies available with friendly prices; trades to cool pop things are also welcomed. Readers in the US or in Continental Europe can acquire their copies most efficiently from the labels Jigsaw and Radio Khartoum respectively, or from respectable mail orders like Roundabout or Mind The Gap. I'm kind of new to this list, but not really new - or?... Actually Daniel, my boyfriend, has been on this list for a while, so I have had the chance to read everything anyway. Anyway, since our computer fucked up about three (was it four??) months ago we (well, he - haha - I've got a computer at work...) have been out in the cold, sort of. So for those of you who tried to mail Daniel in those months, sorry, we haven't been able to get e-mail during this period. (My god would there be a lot of scan-indie messages on the server.) You shouldn't think he doesn't care about you anymore or something. From what I can tell he's freaking out soon without his scandinavian indie mailing list. So, who am I. I mean, I'm more than Daniels girlfriend...:-) Well, I'm a journalist and I work at a net-magazine called Alba, it's about science, culture and the society - nothing about music at all :( By the way I saw Surreal and Silverbullit last friday in Varberg (on the west-coast). Surreal came up with a hole bunch of new catchy lo-fi pop songs. I've seen them about ten times and this was definitely the best! Silverbullit got arrested last time they played in Varberg (the cops thought Simon was on drugs, but the test showed not even alcohol, merely some caffeine...). This time there were no carving with bottles in his face or anything, but I guess Silverbullit were as usual. Surfers, surfers, surfers, what kind of people are they? I guess the audience on "Wave Classic" wanted some skate punk. Or maybe the Beach Boys? Tonight I'm going to Harry's Playground (Gothenburg), for the first time after the summer. That place has managed to get a lot of great bands and is starting to get better than Underground, Kompaniet. Hopefully I get hold of a playlist for the autumn tonight, and I will let you know everything about it. Bye bye! /Johanna PS to Erik: No, the computer is still not fixed! And don't forget Liseberg is closing 28/9 so hurry up down here!! And take Anna with you! Some short reviews: Opening act was J CHURCH from San Francisco, CA. They played punk-pop that appealed to me, my pal and a few others but, untortunately, not to many more people. Their sound reminded me, somewhat, of a speedier Weezer (mostly their "s/t" album). A really good opening of the night, in my opinion. About one hour later the empty spots in front of the stage had become over-crowded with people gathering to see the highlight of the evening: the swedish kings of emo-core - FIRESIDE. I have, actually, never been one of their huge fans (though far from disliking them). When I have seen them play live they have seemed rather dull. That was not, IMO, the case last night. It was, by far, the best gig I have seen them perform. Perhaps the boring Lollapalooza tour made them realize how pleasant it is to perform for their real fans, they certainly seemed to enjoy being on stage. And, in spite of the fact that their new album is not due to be released before monday, the audience followed their example. I, sometimes, had to concentrate more on not being pushed to the floor than on the music. But I could hear that the new material sounded just as good, even better than, "Do not tailgate". Before the gig ended (with a long version of "Shelagh") some people in the audience were allowed to borrow the microphone and a bass guitar and Frans ended his appearance standing on the hands of the audience trying to look like one of those olympic statues of ancient Greece (I think). Certainly a very pleasant night, hopefully to be followed by even more pleasant ones. I guess the only person who might be disappointed was the girl who spent the whole time shouting to FIRESIDE, asking them to play "Left rustle", which they did not do. /Micke -------------------------------- Date: Sat, 6 Sep 1997 00:08:11 -0700 From: "Dave Liljengren" Subject: Another fine column from Johanna Hillgren Johanna Hillgren has set out another Scan/Indie manifesto at http://www.seattlesquare.com/pandemonium/featurestext/BashfulSwede.htm Check it out. Dave Liljengren --------------------------------- Date: Sat, 6 Sep 1997 18:26:52 -0500 From: mqo4365@is4.nyu.edu (Martin Olson) Subject: Cinnamon at CMJ in NYC This Swedish band (not that I'd ever heard of them, but that could just be me) played last night here in New York for the CMJ festival. Playing to a half-filled Knitting Factory audience of revolting hipsters, industry types and little kids (Superdrag, a band who had one big radio hit over here in the US but who are actually a really good band were on right afterwards) they looked a little bit nervous to be there but none the less did a good job. Truth be told, I found their CD "The Courier" to be a bit lacking in just about every way. There were some good ideas on there but the energy level sortof just doesn't get them anywhere. That and somehow, the songs were a little bit too stylistically similar for my tastes. So, that said, I was happily surprised to find out that they're actually MUCH better live. They had some spunk. They hopped around a bit. The lead singer made strange stereolabby moogish noises with a keyboard that weren't on the CD. I think my only complaint about their show is that there was a bit of an element of rock-star art-wankiness about them. Example: At the end of their last song, the lead singer tried to suavely walk off stage and let the boys finish off with a big musical flourish (which held uncomfortable resemblences to the way the Cardigans do things live, but I digress) and she couldn't get the side-of-the-stage door open. It made the whole gesture seem genuinely pretentious and kindof funny. At least they were nice enough to respond favorably when I jokingly shouted "Heja Sverige!" between one of the songs. Anyway, that's that. I'm going to give their album a few more listens to see if maybe I missed something. later, Martin. -------------------------------- Date: Sat, 06 Sep 1997 20:44:17 -0700 From: Jed Edwards Dore Subject: Cinnamon is spicy I saw Cinnamon in S.F. during an intimate show at a book store of all places, and then later at the Paradise Lounge. Jiri,Jari, and Frida were simply magical in their acoustical performances. Frida's voice carries tremendously well, and it certainly made this boy gush. I also think that their live performances are surely not to be missed and that the somewhat heavely produced, yet lovable "Courier" cd is always worth a second chance. Two gig reviews: EVERFRESH and PAPAS FRITAS (US). I have never heard EVERFRESH before but someone told me that they have released one album. Judging from their ghastly dialect they are a local band, from the Linkoping area. The dialect was not the only ghastly thing this night. The music was of a type I have severe troubles with: tra-la-la punk-pop a la GREEN DAY. I could stand it for a couple of tunes but during the third song I found myself studying a butterfly which was flying around beneath the ceiling. The rest of the concert I tried, without success, to forget that I had been awake since 6.45 in the morning. The band members attempts to be witty, between the songs, made it even worse. I might have a weird opinion about what is funny but I do not consider it funny when a guy tries to talk like a girl all the time, or when the sound technician grabs a mic and shouts "whore" in it. This sucked. Badly! The PAPAS FRITAS gig, on the other hand, I will remember with great pleasure. This night was the ultimate proof that american pop music is the best in the world, no doubt about it. Others have described their music as "naive pop" (meant in a positive manner), "cute" (dito) and "very promising" and I can only agree. This was everything that constitutes good pop music, IMO: beautiful harmonies/melodies; texts that at least seemed to mean something; humour; intelligence; charm and the fact that they only seemed to have two goals when entering the stage: 1) To have fun and 2) to see to it that everyone else had fun too. This night ended wiht a lot of smiles, both on stage and in front of it. I have never before experienced that a band has been called back onto stage four (!) times to play encores (OK, they never actually left the stage between the appearances, they just stood in a remote corner of it and listened to the cheers from the audience). Let's face it, there is nothing that can beat a night which has featured a splendid cover version of "Be my baby" and a tap-dancing drummer. Up next (on thursday) at Herrgarn is CHICKENPOX - Linkopings own ska heroes. And, with risk of repeating myself: the SPOCK gig has been postponed (again!!) until November 6th. /Micke ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Sep 1997 01:41:18 +0200 (MET DST) From: Micke Rehnstrom Subject: THE CREEPS follow-up Just to follow up on an earlier thread: a while ago someone asked whether THE CREEPS were still around.
