Have they done anything besides "pa hotell"? Yeah, yeah, I actually do have a few major label releases in my collection. But the band seems to have quite a few redeeming qualities, even if the singer does make me think of a Swedish langauge Sting at times. Like their broad use of quite a few jazz genres within a pop/dance format. Especially dig the "harlem-globetrotters" styled whistling on "mindre smakar mer". Well, any opinions out there? After 2 years of being vaguely aware of Bo Kaspers, I like them more and more, even if they're getting a _bit_ overplayed in Sweden at the moment. Their new album 'Amerika' seems to have quite a number of nice laid-back jazzy tracks on it. Their not by any means indie, but you could certainly put them on as background music, flipping between them and Stereolab and CBJ and Portishead and everyone would complement you on how good a cup of coffee you make. Robert, while I'm here, anyone know anything about the Bad Cash Quartet? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Mar 1997 15:23:40 +0000 From: beluga.tsg@stockholm.mail.telia.com Subject: Sound Affects #34 Hi all, just to let you know I got Sound Affects in my mail box today, >Sound Affects - the best pop music magazine in Sweden (yeah yeah) have their > homepages hot and almost ready, finally. Per didn't mention that last thursday, but I do know that Eggstone is going to Japan next week (together with a new Japan-only single...), but according to the guys in Dipper, they will be there for three weeks, and Cloudberry Jam will only be there for about a week, so maybe they have worked something out for those gigs? Anyway, their tour dates should appear somewhere soon, so then we'll know what the deal is for sure. //Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Mar 1997 06:54:40 +0100 (MET) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Aqudays + Fidget story To make a long story short, my car broke down half way to Stockholm yesterday, which meant that we missed Shallow's performance at Tre Backar and the Fidget release pre-party at Tantogarden. But after we had the car towed away in the snowstorm, we grabbed the train from Sodertalje and made it just in time to see Aquadays (just simply amazing!) and managed to go to the Fidget release party afterwards, but unfortunately not in time to see their performance, though in time to bump into Sami Sirvio (Kent fella') and enjoy a few beers and the DJ:ing from Fidget band members and Mega A&R Peter Ejheden as well as give up the long queue to Kvarnen and clean Louise's bag at McDonald's after someone emptied a large coke over it. Fortunately, we were able to hitch a ride back to Linkoping with Fidget member Daniel and his girlfriend and a friend of theirs who had room in their car. Phew! Well back home I find that my VCR is broken again (twice in two months) which meant that nothing I programmed it to record had been recorded. Anyone have some luck to share? Anyway, check out Z-TV Nytt next week for a Fidget-special (with weird questions and answers) and evening paper Aftonbladet probably ran a story/ interview today that Hakan Steen made with them this week (I don't know if it's in the paper today because I haven't been able to buy or check the paper today - anyone?). Tour-wise, good news for you guys in Finland too! Apart from Sweden, the band plans to tour Finland (and hopefully manage to get to Tampere this time :-)) in April/May. Oh - the band will have another release party in their hometown (Gothenburg) on thursday next week (March 27th) at Harry's //Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se) - hoping to win the lottery in order to be able to repair the car and the VCR... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Mar 1997 10:47:38 +0100 From: totte.pop@swipnet.se (Totte Pop) Subject: Fidget story or? is the album any good? /totte Thank you very much totte.pop@swipnet.se (Totte Pop) -------------------------------- Date: Mon, 24 Feb 1997 21:46:02 -0800 From: Aprill Subject: Compilation CD Hi there, I am looking for indiepop bands from UK, Asia, and Europe that might be interested in being on an Australian International INdiepop compilation. I was to the Rocket festival (arranger: Eric Paglia of old Bandit) at Karen at the royal institute of technology this Friday. I thought I'd write something short about each band playing there. First out was: Star Ryder. I haven't heard this band before, but it caught my ears that they are from Lulea. The playad a realle Oasis-influenced rock with nice melodies and some good swing. But, i think they should sell their Oasis-records and start doing something of their own. Everything was very plagiarized. Honey Cave, was the second band to play. I don't know where they are from but if I'm not totally wrong they just released their debut-album (tell me!). I can't really understand that they have e record deal, 'cause I couldn't stand more than three songs. The (girl) singer was really terrible and her voice was very unpleasant and the music was nothing special almost without any melodies. Sorry but this was to much for me. Nice with a violin though! Mismates really caught my interest! They started up with two soft, almost acoustic songs, that really made right to Anna's (the singer) beautiful voice! After the two first songs they changed to a little bit harder sound, playing nice pop songs! This was one of the best bands of the evening! Quote: "Thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks!" Superswirls played really cool synth-rock music with great sound effects! Too bad that the singer didn't catch ONE clean tone during the whole gig. Anyway this was the best band of the evening and I would even buy their album! But I'd like to hear a better singer and better melodies. Quote: "I hope you are satisfied, because you paid 60 bucks to see this....SHIT!" Mazarine Street. I have seen/heared this band two times before (at Lollipop & Studion) and both times they where a lot better than this. What I think is unique with them is that they have a kind of a DJ scratching LP's & making realtime sound effects. Unfortunately they've mixed down everything of it which made the music boring to listen to. The same songs, the same screams from the singer, the same guitar riffs and so on... sorry guys you were better... Quote: "We are really famous!" & "Keep smoking, keep smoking on!" Grass-Show opened for Kula Shaker at their England tour. I can't really understand why 'cause the music was nothing special (unlike Kula Shaker). They are good musicians and they've have a lot of stage experience. A good looking band. But nothing more. I didn't see the last band, Fungus, anybody heard of them? Remember that this are only my opinions, maybe I wasn't in mood that evening 'cause I just realized that I've critized everything. Anyway I hade a nice & fun night with some good music! Thanx... No, I don't like them very much either... Just to complete Chief's story about the Fidget release party... I was there, and I chatted with guitarist Daniel for a while. He told me that while his girlfriend was driving up from Goteborg that evening, she had actually seen Erik and his broken car along the road somewhere :) Why she didn't stop to support you or something beats up... Fidget played five or six songs at the party, which was OK but the volume was too low. There were pop stars galore... Kent, Popsicle, Wannadies, Whale, Fireside, Teddybears, you name it... A little too crowded for me, so I left after the gig was over. -------------------------------- Date: Mon, 24 Mar 1997 20:00:13 +0200 (EET) From: Timo Riitamaa Subject: apologies not accepted i came back from my week-long holiday in the Uber-poppy sweden, and OH disaster awaited me. i had sent the oxford tape, but with the wrong adress. don't ask me how this happened, i think it had something to do with extraterrestrial beings. so when i came back, the tape was here. from wich i could make the clever conclusion that it was not where it was supposed to be... but i have now sent the tape again, this time with the right adress... i lick your doc martens and beg for forgivness. n.p.i.m.r. On Sun, 23 Mar 1997, totte.pop@swipnet.se (Totte Pop) wrote about: Fidget story or? > is the album any good? It certainly is. :-) Even though I'm not _extremely_ satisified with it ('Semi-Naked' isn't what it used to be for example, and they didn't include the wonderful guitar-walls they have when they play live), it's got the amazing 'My Prawns' which actually is enough for me because it's just a marvel in itself. Here are some thoughts on some of the songs: 'Pokerface' is a weird thing with a banjo and a blip-blop synth between lovely electric guitar choruses where they use a hollow sound on the synth with a perfect fit. 'Singoalla' on the album is actually a new title for the demo song 'Hoovering Away', though it is the studio version with a lot more synthesizer sound and Nina's voice not as happy-go-lucky sounding, and thus not as naive and genuine as the demo version. 'Teddy' is the studio version of the demo song with the same name. Here they have added background strings (!) which I wish they hadn't because it is a very beautiful song in itself, without them. Slow and sad with a jangly guitar, a moody synth and a piano. 'Fast Forward' is really really good - disted electric guitars mixed with a bit of Superswirls sounding synths and (you know the Commodore 64 game 'Rambo' - when it loaded, the intro song that played then? Ie. the same as in the movie, but with the C-64 sound. Exactly the same sound!) early Depeche Mode synth sounds. 'My Prawns' is like I said, just totally mindblowing. Disted guitar intro leading into a single key synth w/Nina's voice with her Finnish accent, adding a single jangly electric guitar, then a disted electric guitar more and more, and finally going into the guitar filled chorus. And that's where Nina's voice really goes into high-performance. It's alarmingly good. 'Focus' is a slower pace song with a muffled effect on Nina's voice in low key, and it almost sounds like they've used the effect on the instruments as well. 'Night Out' I'd almost like to call a punk song because of the fast and heave chorus pieces, but the parts between them are in another division - the more Fidget like division. Interesting "secret" - they used the demo version of 'Stop Losing' on the second single and the album. Another "secret" - they will use the guitar-wall bliss on an upcoming single! Yaaay! :-) We discussed the way the studio recorded/produced songs sound on the singles and album compared to the demo versions with Louise, and came to the conclusion that it would be better to record everything as demos, without the pressure that comes with "serious" recordings. It just isn't the same. Anyway, Fidget is definitely Sweden's only band that sounds like this, and I'd say that's a pretty good reason to at least listen to the album before you buy. //Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Mar 1997 19:42:15 +0100 (MET) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Re: Wannadies On Sun, 23 Mar 1997, Michael Rehnstrom wrote about: Wannadies > Isabella wrote something about Gunnar leaving The Wannadies. ZTV and Expressen (and I think Aftonbladet) reported the same thing last week, and said that the band is looking for a new replacement right now. //Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Mar 1997 19:42:37 +0100 (MET) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Re: Sin's Selected News [20-Mar-97] On Sun, 23 Mar 1997, xander@sirius.com wrote about: Sin's Selected News [20-Mar-97] >> Per didn't mention that last thursday, but I do know that Eggstone is going >> to Japan next week (together with a new Japan-only single...), but according > > Anyone know what the single is? The CD is ready for the trash heap. I know it was already reported that the CD became damaged somewhere along the line (there is a huge hole right on the side with the digital information). I seem to recall that someone said part of it was still playable, that a few of the tracks would play. Kimmo made the decision to keep the thing going for that reason. Well, someone must have messed it up even more, then, because it's dead now. I tried it in two CD players, and then took it over my best friend's house (he happens to fix stereo equipment for a living, so he knows all about CD players) and he tried it in three CD players in his house. No go on any of them. He assured me that the CD was unplayable because the Table of Contents is destroyed (the Table of Contents is sort of an index at the very beginning of the CD, and there is a bubble that keeps it from being played. So, even though sections of the CD are undamaged, a player can't read them because of that bubble. I know I'm already a bit miffed about paying to send this thing on when I didn't even get a chance to hear it, but I guess I will send it on back home to Kimmo...Kimmo, maybe you can make another one?? And tell people to be careful this time?? :-) Later, Chris --------------------------------- Date: Tue, 25 Mar 1997 06:29:43 +0100 (MET) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Re: Rocket Festival... and Fidget On Mon, 24 Mar 97, etxsahm@cyber.ericsson.se (Marten Sahlen) wrote about: Rocket Festival... and Fidget > Just to complete Chief's story about the Fidget release party... She even signed my copy of the album with "I should have stopped" :-) Anyway, I guess we were too late to mingle with the pop-star-crowd as we only spotted Sami.
