Thery're from my town and practice next to us. They're the coolest people. And they don't play britpop, they're much more synthoriented. The singer is one of the best i've ever heard. And they have a new album out. they used to sound sort of like the late sugarcubes, but now they've evolved into something else, which i just can call Plum. philip ----------------------------------- Date: Fri, 7 Mar 1997 10:25:02 +0200 (EET) From: Kimmo Saaskilahti Subject: Re: Un Rayo de Sol (mostly non-scan) I'm trying to be brief here, as this is mostly about non-Scandie bands... It's a gem. No, I put two other tracks from their Siesta CD (which is their only release I think?): 'Loveless' and 'De Flux En Flirt'. It's a great CD and if you're interested, you can order it eg. from Mind The Gap in Germany (email to Jwinzer@aol.com). It's by far the best mail order service for Siesta and Elefant releases. The Siesta album 'Grand Vitesse' is the best thing by them that I have heard. The album on Sunday (titled 'Atlantic') is very good as well, but the other one is still my favourite. >>Club 8 >Oh, you have really picked three of my (and I know Kimmo's) favourites Not that anybody is interested, but my fave band on Siesta are La Buena Vida (can't wait to hear their brand new album!!), my affection for the band Le Mans goes even further... Anyway, the three bands mentioned in this posting are not far behind :) Especially Club 8, about whom I cannot say enough good things; the music they make is among the most beautiful that I have ever heard. The combination of acoustic and jangly electric guitars, elegant keyboards and drum machines, and Karolina's magnificent voice is simply awesome. And as their songwriting skills are nothing short of excellent, the music is just gorgeous, both in a 'sunny summer morning' and 'rainy afternoon' kind of way. >Who's with me trying to arrange a gig with Club 8 and Red Sleeping Beauty?? Don't know about Club 8 but I think RSB do not have a habit of playing live often...I think they do about one gig in a year or so...but if this gig should happen, I would certainly love to be there! I was a bit disappointed, really. Except for the vocals it did not sound much like the Bear Quartet I know, it sounded almost like any indie pop band from the northern parts of our country! Usually, at those very few occasions when a TBQ song is played on the radio, I get the feeling that I have to drop everything I am doing at the moment and just listen. This song made me feel.... well, nothing special. But perhaps I shouldn't judge this song after hearing it only once, since it is TBQ I guess I will give it at least a couple of more chances. /Micke, possessing other virtues than bitterness - What's your virtue? This sounds like BQ '94, tighter and more energy. The thing that hit me after I've listen to the EP, is the change of the often so melancolic lyrics. I've never seen BQ's lyrics so bitter and cynical. ("glad to leave you pussies hanging from the balls" and "you educated crybabies couldn't even wipe my ass / with your cosy knowledge cosy middleclass" [from "Engaged, Eraged Erased) Quite fun, though. /daniel ----------------------------------- Date: Wed, 12 Mar 1997 18:26:55 +0100 From: Isabella Subject: Re: TBQ questions >> I do know that Jari Haapalainen(?spelling?) plays in the band called the >> Bear Quartet. But I had no idea that his father owned a record store here >> in Luleå. ^^^^^^ > > Music instruments, not records.. :-] > And yeah, the spelling is correctamundo. Goodnight (2.39) In a desperate attempt to compare these new songs with the somewhat older ones on their recently released debut album, I find that I do not have the album in question, which in turn means that no comparison of the sort is possible. What I can do instead, is to compare them to what I have heard on the radio/TV and a recording of their live performance here in Link|ping not long ago. This leaves me with no other alternative than to say what I have said about them before - they are as tight live as they are on their records. 'Who Are You?' on my live recording sounds almost alarmingly close to the same song on this EP. All songs here fit well into the "heavy electric guitar segments mixed with charming intros, outros and choruses" style which they have set up for themselves, and of course, on top of everything, Annika Persson's distinct, almost breaking, vocals. But no song really stands out from the other. One song plays after another, and I never really notice. Not until I reach the last song, "Goodnight", which is a slow and easy duet (male/female) goodnight song, just like the title says. A nice surprise and a good song to end the EP with. After some time away from the Swedish indie-synth-pop scene, the Kings are now back! I'm interested to hear what's up, and if anyone > has heard their latest releases (Sandbugs and Homespun - as far as I know)? I heard a single from Sandbugs, they were supposed to be lo-fi influenced, but they were just boring pop, which most of us finns don't know how to make. But, i did hear the tommi Liimatta record, he is with Absoluuttinen Nollapiste. It was quite ok, very lo-fi. And he sings about his home town, which is also my home town. And i heard a band from Finland that was good, but i'm not really sure what they were called... "Hyenas" something, they're song or record was called "skin on my teeth", and if i got it right the band included Sam Jaffa. Please tell me more about them, they were really good, sort of PJ Harveyish. There's is another good new(?) finnish called Going Public. It's not really my kind of music, but they sound like Garbage, bush, well at least something along those lines, and i'd at least rather listen to them than the mentioned bands, cause they are much more interesting. I heard a new demo from finnish indiepop band leisure class, but i wasn't so impressed. It seemed like music for small kids, really obvious and boring. philip ----------------------------- Date: Mon, 17 Mar 1997 06:25:03 +0100 (MET) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Sin's Music on the TV [14-Mar-97] * LATE * ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie MUSIC ON THE TV Scandinavian Indie March 14 -> March 20 by Erik Soderstrom (chief@lysator.liu.se) Day Date Artist/What TV Program Channel Time --- ----- ---------------------- ------------------- ----------- ----- Fri 14/3 - Sat 15/3 Neneh Cherry Live 'n' Loud MTV Europe 16.30 R Nina Persson, Hellac. And now I just heard from MVG the other day that their new album should be out the first week of April (though the date is not completely sure yet).
