There are many great persons on the Sufi path who are Sunni and others who are Shi`ah, so it certainly is not becoming to us to argue as to which is better (not that you are doing that, but just before this happens!). Ahl al-Sunna give equal honor and respect to all four khulafa' al-rashidin (well-guided/guiding successors). At the same time each has special fada'il (merits) which are well-known and stated by the Prophet (s) himself. To the fada'il of sayyidina `Ali is added the unique feature of being a first cousin of the Prophet (s) and the husband of his daughter Fatima, who herself has unique qualities among the Prophet's children. So let us not be stingy in accepting their "special" status, since the foundation is sound -- that we love and respect all of them without doubt, and that no-one among the Companions is closer to the Prophet (s) than Abu Bakr, then `Umar, then `Uthman, then `Ali. May God be well pleased with them all! To date I have completed nearly half of these 400 odes. It is the color of one's shroud also. The commentaries aver that the Prophet Salih's "Sign" to his people was the appearance of a huge white she-camel (7:73). Green: Also the best color. It is one of the names for Paradise as well as the name of al-Khidr, whose effect on every place he enters is to turn it green with vegetation even if it was barren before. The Prophet's likeness in the imaginal world is a green bird according to an authentic hadith. Red: It was the color worn by the Prophet (s) at the time that Jabir ibn Samurah observed: <> "Red" is one of the Prophet's attributes in the sense of "fair," and he called `A'isha <> or "Little Red One." The most precious camel for the Arabs is the red camel. Many others have also published versions of a smattering of these, most notable Barks, however I find them for the most part unsatisfactory, for obvious reasons. It would be nice to present versions with more fidelity to the spirit of Mevalna. Pickthall translates this as: "(We take our) colour from Allah, and who is better than Allah at colouring. We are His worshippers." I think Pickthall's translation is probably more literal, while Yusuf Ali's and Shakir's translations here are more like interpretations. The Qur'an mentions green overtly about a dozen times. In paradise we will lie on green couches, and wear green silk. I think these ayat occur in Sura Rahman (55) and Sura Kahf (18) and al-Dahr (76) In Sura Ya Sin the Qur'an speaks of green wood from which fire will start (36.82) Some other ayat refer to green corn (Sura Yusuf). Clearly green is a symbol of the garden (paradise) as in the references to green couches and green silk in paradise, plus the obvious vegetational nature of green in the garden. The night sky is called khudram (dark green) in Sura Rahman. This motif carries forward from pre-Islamic poetry. The Green One, al-Khi.dr, not named in the Qur'an, but as * 'abd min 'ibadina*, symbolizes the purifying and transforming of consciousness and perception of theodicy and the unfolding of the soul. In Hadith Sahih, Muhammad explains that al-Khi.dr was named for his capacity to transform barren ground upon which he had sat into green. In the Hadith, Allah informs Moses (Musa) of the name of the being he seeks as being al-Khi.dr. Standing at the place where the two seas meet (*majma' al-bahrain*) Khi.dr is likely to be standing by at least one green sea. But Allah knows best. I know that they have it at Kazi Publications in Chicago in English (as well as Urdu). The treatise deals with the rules that are bound on the Awliya, the rules on the follower, the rules of many, many other things. It should be in some of the bigger campus libraries. Salam, Jawad. This event is meant to be an alternative to the usual hotel convention type of meeting and a chance for people to come close together in a camping atmosphere under beautiful skies and in clean and clear air. The powwow is a family camping event on a high mesa at 6,000 feet with spectacular views of the Sangre de Christo Mountains and the Chama River valley. Meetings and talks will be held in the rooms and courtyards of a 39,000 square-foot adobe mosque complex and under a large tent. Emphasis will be on two way communication rather than lectures. There will be scholars of various kinds and a true diversity of communities represented, a unique coming together, by the Will of Allah. Recreational activities include archery, swimming, hiking, star gazing, and storytelling. It is a very serious subject with no easy answers but, alhamdulillah, there are clear criteria in this case to protect both the seeker and the sought {murid wa murad}. 1) The shaykh (or shaykah) is a Muslim adhering to Qur'an and Sunnah outwardly and inwardly, in the large and the small which can be seen reflected in their family life, means of earning a living, activities, surroundings and concerns. 2} The shaykh {or shaykah} has received 'idhn {permission} to transmit the way and is willing to furnish proof of this in the form of an 'izajah from his {or her} shaykh {or shaykha}. This 'ijazah is preferably written, signed and duly witnessed certificate of khilafah. the one who grants this certificate must themselves be known as a true 'link' in the chain which is to say that they too must have had a shaykh {or shaykha} to which all of the same qualifications apply and this must continue up to the Prophet Muhammad, blessings of Allah and peace be upon him, his family and companions throughout time. 3} The shaykh {or shaykha} must both be in the possession of and capable of transmitting thru teaching and guidance the perfect means of attaching ones own self to the Absolute and the efficacious methods of concentrating on the Reality. Sidi Zarruq, a shaykh in the line of the Shadhdhuli said regarding the implicit conditions of the shaykh: 1} He must have a pure and lucid taste. 2}His outward knowledge must be sound. 3}His aspiration must be strong. 4}His outward state must be pleasing. he says further that anyone who manifests any of the following qualities cannot be considered a shaykh, 1}Ignorance of the Deen {the 'relgion' of 'Islam} 2}Disregard {or scorn} for the sanctity of the Muslims. 3}Entering that which is not his concern. 4}Follwing his own desires. 5} Lack of shame in regard to bad manners or bad character. It is the duty of the seeker as well as the sought to apply firm criteria in regards to entering into the bay'ah or ahd. I have found the above criteria to be useful and hope that they will be of use to others. The following is the partial transcript of a suhba (talk) given by Shaykh Hisham Kabbani in late 1991 or early 1992. "... How do you know a guide? Once, Grandsheikh said, to know that a guide is a true guide, first you must see that he has completed all his external outfit. If you see that he is incomplete in bearing the externals, it means that he has a defect in his heart. Do not follow him. Anything in a Sufi master--and we are speaking about sufism, not about anything else--that is not the true external dress and manner of a true master, betrays a defect. Grandsheikh said, if you have a watch, and that watch is internally working one hundred percent, but has no needles, it will not guide you with the time; so there is no benefit in it. And if a watch, also, has two needles without the internal mechanics working one hundred percent also it will not show you the correct time. So the outward and the inward must both be completely correct for that man to be a guide. "We are not speaking about ourselves. We are following our master--he is a guide. He is our guide, and he is working one hundred percent both outwardly and inwardly. As for us, we are trying to imitate. That is why, when we want to look at a guide, to say, "This person is a true guide," you must see him complete the outfit without any nuqsaniyya [lack], not lacking anything. If there is anything missing, then you cannot follow him. It means that if he is missing something from his exterior, then he is leaving many things in his interior; for that is where people cannot see. You are going to dress well when you know that people are looking at you. But when people are not looking at you, you say never mind, they are not seeing me. So you will have more things missing. If, in your outfit which people are going to see, you are missing many things, it means that your "infit"--so to speak--which people are not seeing, is missing even more things. That is why such a person is not a true guide. He is a disconnected guide. He might take you to a certain distance in the spiritual life but he is disconnected from any further levels. A true guide must have correctly completed his exterior, without missing one thing. "This is the first step, Grandsheikh said, in knowing whether someone is a real guide or a false guide. When you see this from him, then you say, he has now passed, not the first test, but the first criterion. So we now think of looking at his inner side. How do you look at the inner side? He said, when you see that person has respect for everyone, without the slightest discrimination towards any human being, without looking at their religion--because they are servants of one Lord, the same Lord, and the Lord doesn't change--without discrimination for any in his heart: whether one is Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist... It is not your business, it is not his business, because they are the servants of his Lord. He has to respect them, first, because they are God's creation, and have that light in them. Then, after having respect for them, he must have love for them. To accept what he wants for himself and his children, to be and act also in their behalf, although they are not yet his followers but simply ordinary people. So he must show them respect and love. Thirdly, he must show them humbleness, that is, he must be lower than they are. He cannot say that he is higher than they. No one is high except God. If he will see himself higher than they are, then he is like Satan who saw himself higher than Adam. "These three criteria are the "inner accessories" of the true guide. For the outfit he must have the complete dress of a Sufi master. If your master is like that, then that one is a true guide. Follow him. At that time you can find satisfaction and all what you are missing. If you do not find someone like that, then look more. You will find, because God is merciful. When you look, God will give. When you do not ask, God will not give. If you really ask from your heart, you are going to find. At that time, he will give you the key to your heart. If you are not really asking from your heart but only with the tongue, perhaps you might see one, perhaps not...." Whoever emigrates towards God and His Messenger, his emigration is towards God and His Messenger; whoever emigrates for the attainment of a worldly goal or in order to marry a woman, then his emigration is only towards what he emigrated to." The two imams of hadith: Abu `Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Isma`il ibn Ibrahim ibn al-Mughira ibn Bardizbah al-Bukhari and Abu al-Husayn Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj ibn Muslim al-Qushayri al-Nisaburi narrated it in their two collections of sound hadith which are the soundest of all hadith compilations. The hadith indicates that the intention is a yardstick for making one's actions sound. Only insofar as the intention is correct is the action correct, and insofar as the intention is wrong is the action wrong. If an action takes place and an intention accompanies it, such action is characterized by one of the following three states: a) It is performed out of fear of God the Exalted: this is the worship of slaves (`abid). b) It is performed in the pursuit of the Garden of Paradise and the pursuit of reward: this is the worship of traders (tujjar). c) It is performed out of shame before God and in order to fulfill the duty of servanthood and give thanks while one sees oneself remiss despite doing all this, fearing in his heart because he does not know -- even then -- if his action is accepted or not: this is the worship of free men (ahrar). [This threefold definition of the states of the intention is attributed to the early Sufi Ma`ruf al-Karkhi (d. 200/815) by Shaykh `Abd al-Rahman al-Sufuri in his "Nuzhat al-Majalis," chapter on sincerity.] God's Messenger alluded to the latter when `A'isha -- may God be well pelased with her -- upon seeing him spend the night standing in prayer until his feet were swollen, asked him: "O Messenger of God, why do you place such a burden on yourself when God has forgiven you all your sins past and those to come?" He replied: "Should I not be a thankful servant?" (Muslim, "Munafiqun" #79, Tirmidhi, "Salat" #197) If it is asked: which is best, to worship with fear or to worship with hope? It is answered: Ghazali said -- may God have mercy on him: "To worship with hope is better because hope gives rise to love, while fear gives rise to despair." The above three stages or divisions are with respect to the sincere. Know that sincerity may find in its way the bane of pride. Whoever admires his works, his works have failed, and similarly whoever waxes proud, his works have failed. [Note: This is the characteristic of Iblis alluded to in this saying related from the shaykh of my shaykh: "You may be able to worship perfectly for thousands and millions of years. However, if you think for one moment that your worship amounts to something, you are the greatest disbeliever."] The second state is (also) when one acts in the pursuit of both a worldly benefit and the hereafter. It is the opinion of some of the scholars that the works of such a person are not accepted. Their proof for this is the divine report wherein God the exalted says: "I am the most sufficient of partners. Whoever does an action in which he associates with a partner other than Myself, I have nothing to do with him." (Muslim "Zuhd" #46 and Ibn Maja, "Zuhd" #45). This is the position of al-Harith al-Muhasibi* in "Kitab al-ri`aya li huquq Allah" [Book of the Observance of God's Rights] in which he says: "Sincerity is to seek God in obeying Him without seeking other than Him." *[Abu Abd Allah al-Harith Al-Muhasibi al-`Anazi [d. 243/857]: An early Sufi of Baghdad who was the shaykh of al-Junayd. Nawawi cites him frequently. It is established in the Shafi`i school that "Upon the books of al-Harith ibn Asad [al-Muhasibi] on kalam, fiqh, and hadith rest those among us who are mutakallim, faqih, and sufi." Know that the word "intention" (niyya) lexically means "purpose, aim, meaning" (qasd). One says: "May God intend good for you," which means "May He mean good for you." Legally intention means to aim to do something and proceed to do it. If one aims to do something and then delays doing it, it is only a decision (`azm). Intention was made a legal category in order to distinguish acts of habit from acts of worship and in order to distinguish the standing of one act of worship from that of another. An illustration of the former distinction is the act of sitting in a mosque: its purpose could be rest according to habit, or it could be worship with the intention of seclusion-and-devotion (i`tikaf). The distinguishing factor here between habot and worship is intention. The Prophet -- Blessings and Peace of God be upon him -- pointed to this distinction in meaning when he was asked about a man who fights in order to be seen, another who fights in self-defense, and another who fights out of bravery: which of these is fighting in the way of the Exalted God? He said: "Whoever fights in order that God's word prevail, he is fighting in the way of God the Exalted" (Bukhari, "`Ilm" #45, "Jihad" #15, Muslim, "Tawhid" #28, "Imara" #150-151, Tirmidhi, "Fada'il al-jihad" #15, Ibn Majah, "Jihad" #13, Ahmad 4:392, 398, 402, 417). An illustration of the latter distinction -- that is in the standing of one act of worship as opposed to another -- is someone who prays four cycles of prayer (rak`a): he could mean their enactment as a fulfillment of the obligatory Noon Prayer, and he could mean their enactment as a fulfillment of the voluntary Sunna Prayer. What distinguishes between the two is the intention. It is the same with manumission. One may mean expiation by it and one may mean other than that, such as the fulfillment of a vow and so forth. Again what distinguishes between them is the intention. The Prophet's saying -- Blessings and Peace of God be upon him: "to each only what he intended" is proof that proxy is not allowe in acts of worship nor is appointing a representative to formulate the same intention as oneself. The exception to this is is in the distribution of the poor-tax (zakat) and the slaughtering of a sacrifice: it is permissible to appoint a proxy in both of these, for all of the intention, the slaughtering, and the distribution, even if one is able to make one's own intention. This is not permissible in the matter of pilgrimage and the repayment of a debt when one is able to make one's own intention. Acts (other than worship) which can have but one interpretation do not stand in need of an intention; those that can have two (or more) do. For example, one who owes two thousand of which one thousand cover something given as a security (rahn); if, when he pays one thousand, he says: "Let this be the one thousand for which I gave a security," he is right. If he does not formulate such an intention during payment he can do so afterwards to whatever end he desires. Our school (Shafi`i) does not recognize the soundness of an intention made after the fact except in such a case. On the Prophet's saying -- Blessings and Peace of God be upon him: "Whoever emigrates towards God and His Messenger, his emigration is towards God and His Messenger; whoever emigrates for the attainment of a worldly goal or in order to marry a woman, then his emigration is only towards what he emigrated to": The original meaning of emigration (muhajara) is flight and abandonment. The name "hijra" has several meanings: 1. The exodus of the Companions -- may God be well pleased with them -- from Mecca to Abyssinia at the time the idolaters were persecuting God's Messenger -- Blessings and Peace of God be upon him. They escaped persecution and sought safety with the Negus. Bayhaqi said: "This hijra took place five years after the beginning of the Messenge." 2. The second meaning of hijra is the exodus from Mecca ot Madina. This took place thirteen years after the beginning of the Message. It was an obligation for every Muslim in Mecca to emigrate towards God's Messenger -- Blessings and Peace of God be upon him -- in Madina at that time. A number of scholars said that the emigration was obligatory from Mecca to Madina in absolute terms. In reality it was not obligatory in absolute terms for there was nothing special about Madina. The only obligation was to emigrate towards God's Messenger himself -- Blessings and Peace of God be upon him. An example is the person who gazes at a beardless young man: there is no sincerity in such a thing, nay there is no drawing near to God in it whatsoever. Al-Muhasibi continued: "Truthfulness (sidq) as an attribute of a servant of God, means evenness in the private and the public person, in visible and hidden behavior. Truthfulness is realized after the realization of all the stations (maqamat) and states (ahwal). Even sincerity (ikhlas) is in need of truthfulness, whereas truthfulness needs nothing, because although real sincerity is to seek Allah through obedience, one might seek God by praying and yet be heedless and absent in his heart while praying. Truthfulness, then, is to seek God Almighty by worshipping with complete presence of heart before Him. For every truthful one (sadiq) is sincere (mukhlis), while not every sincere one is truthful. That is the meaning of connection (ittisal) and disconnection (infisal): the truthful one has disconnected himself from all that is other-than-God (ma siwa Allah) and he has fastened himself to presence-before-God (al-hudur billah). That is also the meaning of renunciation (takhalli) of all that is other-than-God and self-adornment (tahalli) with keeping present in front of God, the Glorified, the Exalted." By his word "actions" it is possible that the Prophet -- Blessings and Peace be upon him -- meant the soundness of actions, or the correctness of actions, or the acceptance of actions by God, or the perfection of actions. The latter is the sense adopted by Imam Abu Hanifa -- may God the Exalted have mercy on him. Whatever is by way of eliminating something is not counted as one such action. For example: to remove filth from oneself, to resist force, to reject faults, to convey gifts, and other than that. The soundness of thse actions is no dependent upon correcting one's intention; however, their reward is dependent upon the intention of drawing near to God. Thus whoever feeds his animal intending thereby obedience to God's order, he is rewarded, whereas if by feeding it he intends only to preserve his income, there is no reward: al-Qarafi* mentioned it. Excepted from the latter case is the mount of the fighter in the way of God if he bridled it for that intention; if it drinks at a time he does not intend to give it drink, he will still obtain reward for it, as mentioned in Bukhari's "Sahih" ("Jihad" #45). Just as He is greatly above taking a wife or a son or a partner, so is He greatly above accepting an action in which another besides Him is taken as a partner. God the Exalted is greater than that, and He is All- Glorious, and He is All-Sublime. Al-Samarqandi* said: "All that one does for the sake of God the Exalted is accepted, and all one does for the sake of people is rejected." An illustration for this is the person who performs the noon-prayer, for example, intending thereby to fulfill the obligation imposed on him by God the Exalted, except that he makes its integrals and suras long and he beautifies its appearance for the sake of people: the root of the prayer is accepted, but its length and beauty are not because he intended them for the sake of people. *[Abu al-Layth Mudar Nasir ibn Muhammad al-Samarqandi (d. 373/983), a Sufi and jurist of the Hanafi school. He said: "I hope this particular action of his does not fail if he attributed a partner to God in the manner of his prayer. Al-Fudayl ibn `Iyad* said: "To leave an action for the sake of people is making display, and to perform an action for the sake of people is attributing a partner to God. Sincerity is that God exempt you from both." The meaning of his words -- may God the Exalted have mercy on him -- is that whoever resolves to do an act of worship and then leaves it for fear that people should see it, he is making display because he left an action for the sake of people. However, if he leaves it in order to pray it in seclusion (khalwa): this is recommended, except if it is an obligatory prayer or the obligatory poor-tax, or if he is a scholar whom people take as an example. The phenomenon of photisms(coloured lights) in meditation and "mystical states' has been reported in various spiritual traditions, there are for example different chakras (in Sufism lataif) or spiritual subtle centres which are credited with having a particular and specific colour symbolism. This is not only different across different traditions (Tibetan Buddhism different from Hinduism) but also, to some extent, wuithin the same tradition ( eg in sufism, where I have come across slightly different associations of colour and latifa). I wonder, what is the basis for this colour symbolism? Is it purely cultural, or emotional-psychological, or is it based on psychospiritual realities? or perhaps is a matter of physiology and physics?(for example the colour blue, which some systems associate with certain types of healing practices, has a higher vibration rate than yellow)... What is the basis for these associations? Frankly, I am not satisfied by hearing that the reason why green plays such a significant part in Islam is because there are some passages in the Koran mentioning this colour...Not that I question the truth of the scripture, is just that to take only the literal meaning without an effort to understand the inner reality behind it , this is for me a form of shallowness conducive eventually to spiritual death, and fundamentalism ... I think that the injunction to seek knowledge even in China and the prayer to have our knowledge increased are imperative for our spiritual development. So I would like to ask everybody( especially those that until now have been silent) to contribute their knowledge on this subject (whether text based or experiential, insight or even opinion...) I do realise that this type of matter cannot be really explored fully through this media, yet I believe that sharing our insights and knowledges can be of some use. And Allah knows best. (I don't hear people thinking of it as a Fiat lux! type of thing, that is, in which God says Let there be light and there was light, that is, this is not a making it so by decreeing it should be so.) So the question remains of what about green makes it so special. Orf course, in a desert environment, it is not hard to imagine that the sight of a flourishing oasis with greens and palms and some delicious water would seem quite special. Perhaps you want to go even further with this question. I thought that China was a term in Sufi terminology that was a reference to meditative practices. I take it that every tradition with a strong textual component honors learning!
