The first group was filled with greed and the lust for power. They built a statue that was very beautiful on the surface, but in reality was as ugly as they were. They forced people from miles around to bow before their statue, and caused great destruction and misery -- before, one day, their statue was toppled by an uprising of the people they had oppressed. The second group was filled with rather ordinary people. They built a statue that was, well, rather ordinary. They worshipped at the statue for a while, then lost interest and went on to worship at other statues. The third group was filled with beautiful people, who were starting to open up to the light of God within their own hearts. They built a statue that was truly beautiful. But, when they looked at the statue, there was something wrong -- something missing. And, since their motivations were sincere and pure, and since the people themselves were open to change, they broke apart their own statue, and tried again. The fourth group was also filled with beautiful people, but people who were, perhaps, a bit further along in their individual spiritual paths (in fact, most of the people in this group had originally come from one of the other three groups). This group thought briefly about building a Statue of God, but quickly realized that would not be the most productive way to spend their time. So, instead, they each continued to do their own individual work in the best way they knew how. They knew that the only hope to build something worthwhile was by following the light of God within. I want to make my meaning in this story really clear. This is not just a story about building "The Statue of God." This is about _anything_ we try to build. The results of our work will only be -- _can_ only be as beautiful, developed, or ugly as the level of humanity of all the people involved (both builders and worshippers). Specifically, this story is intended as a warning to those of us interested in building messianic movements. yours, habib rose "habibullah" From tariqas-approval Tue Nov 22 08:40:28 1994 Received: by world.std.com (5.65c/Spike-2.0) id AA08942; Tue, 22 Nov 1994 08:40:28 GMT Date: Tue, 22 Nov 1994 08:40:28 GMT Message-Id: <199411220840.AA08942@world.std.com> To: tariqas-approval@world.std.com From: tariqas-approval@world.std.com Subject: BOUNCE tariqas@world.std.com: Admin request Status: RO X-Status: >From @FRMOP11.CNUSC.FR:SSHAHEEN@EGAUCACS.BITNET Tue Nov 22 12:40:00 1994 Return-Path: <@FRMOP11.CNUSC.FR:SSHAHEEN@EGAUCACS.BITNET> Received: from frmop11.cnusc.fr by world.std.com (5.65c/Spike-2.0) id AA08935; Tue, 22 Nov 1994 03:40:27 -0500 Message-Id: <199411220840.AA08935@world.std.com> Received: from EGAUCACS.BITNET by FRMOP11.CNUSC.FR (IBM VM SMTP V2R2) with BSMTP id 5406; Tue, 22 Nov 94 09:40:22 EST Date: Tue, 22 Nov 94 10:40 +0200 From: Subject: Subscription Request To: Tariqas@world.std.com X-Original-To: Tariqas@world.std.com, SSHAHEEN Subscribe Safaa Shaheen Thank you! Habibullah tells a beautiful story to which I add my own twist: | There were four groups of people, who thought of building a Statue of God. | The first group was filled with greed and the lust for power.... | The second group was filled with rather ordinary people.... | The third group was filled with beautiful people.... | The fourth group was also filled with beautiful people, but people who | were, perhaps, a bit further along in their individual spiritual paths The fifth group was filled with invisible people, overlooked by all the others and who, quite unostentatiously, sought to tread their path while not caring if they were ever seen. This group didn't understand all this building Statues of God business. They expressed their love for the divine and some of them expressed this by making very beautiful and very ugly statues. Some cared for the statues as God Hirself, some enjoyed making and breaking these statues in the joy of creating and destroying. They knew that building was not that important in the scheme of things, yet they liked to build and tear down. They thought that hope springs eternal and is not associated with any particular behavior or form of worship. | ...The results of our work will only be -- _can_ only be as beautiful, | developed, or ugly as the level of humanity of all the people involved | (both builders and worshippers). Specifically, this story is intended | as a warning to those of us interested in building messianic movements. Beauty and ugliness are the twin evils created by Allah to instruct us in the nature of the world. We like this and call it 'good'. We dislike that and call it 'bad'. We come to know Allah and call things neither good nor bad. They just are, the perfection of the creation. Messianic movements are very important vehicles of intense emotional transformation. Very often they sacrifice intelligence and perspicacity for the experience of living out a particular history. If approached in a way which is attuned to love, this does not oppose the way of others nor does it coerce or require others to conform to its extremity. Allah dwells within those movements which are respectful of individual integrity and an ability to change and grow. Obedience and discipline, authority (external or internal) merit and responsibility; standards J - P (Judgmental, literal, traditional vs. perceptions, instinctive, independent), A:) You would very much like to do "X" - (speak Japanese, learn to play music, clean the garage, whatever) and the only way it can be done, is to exactly follow instructions. You have to do as your master orders. (teacher - disciple relationship); 1.) You have no problem doing what must be done, YOU follow instructions exactly. 2.) You know you have to do and want to do it, but have some trouble doing exactly what you are told. 3.) You know what you need to do, but can't quite do it as instructed, you think of other ways and means. 4.) You don't want to, but do it reluctantly anyway - sort of 5.) Do it your own way or not at all The Thinking Center; sensible, businesslike II.) Logic and Reason (free markets and technology) Prosperity is just around the corner from new technology. B.) You have a strong feeling that this plane trip is going to crash, (or you have this feeling about someone or something) 5.) you cancel the trip - act on your intuition, even if its a big problem, you are certain it's safer to follow your intuition 4.) If its possible you change plans, planes, but have doubts, you don't tell anyone about your intuition 3.) You worry but go on as before, after all its not reasonable to be worried - there is no objective proof 2.) You try to forget it, but a doubt remains, you need to be logical but still worry 1.) It's just too silly to concern yourself - it's not logical, you only care about objective information The Emotional Center; trust in God and Country, hope III.) The rule of the past - progressive conservative as T.R., the best still is ahead - the politics of hope and the future. C.) If it isn't broke don't fix it! There is a reason for most things, being as they are; 1.) The way things are done is usually the right way 2.) Think carefully before you try anything new 3.) There maybe a better way, let's study it 4.) New ways are often better 5.) Change is almost always for the good - go for it - just do it IV.) Emotional response (soft ideology vs. hard realism) bad habits, crime, welfare vs. hard work, family T- F (thinking abstract logical, expert vs. Feeling, experience, personal, relationships and attachments), D.) Your friend, child, spouse wants to, needs something and you have said "NO", then they plead, cry, beg, etc. 1.) Too bad - NO is NO - no emotion is going to change your hard heart 2.) You are moved but feel you can't change your position. 3.) You compromise a little, offering something else - you relate to their feeling 4.) You give in, but feel you shouldn't 5.) What the hell, it they feel they feel that strongly about it they can have their way this time. V.) Intuition - self-confidence vs. dependency, it will help other by not helping them. (tough love) E.) God (nature) has a order and purpose for our lives and our society - 1.) Yes, we (I) have a special mission in the world 2.) Yes, but there are difficulties in always knowing exactly what it is 3.) Maybe, sometimes I'm sure, but I am also are aware of others with a different idea. 4.) Not really, maybe in some cases, don't know for sure 5.) It's all relative - different strokes for different folks The instinctive center: VI.) Individualism and freedom (Ayn Rand) or liberty, less government, community and local control, We have special missions - such as love of country, neighborhood. S - N (Sensing, concrete, proof by senses step-by-step vs. intuition, reflective inter-guidance system, sense of wholes), F.) You are being pressured to do something you know is wrong, there is a clear benefit of going along and a clear loss by being uncooperative. (Lie to a customer, cut corners, cheat on a form (taxes), go back on your word, fail in your obligations and commitments, fail to deliver as promised) 1.) You are firm and clear and never give in; no compromise 2.) You are clear on your standards but bend a little - bend a little in the wind rather than break, cooperation is necessary 3.) You know what is right but can't always do it, go along to get along, are a practical person 4.) You know you shouldn't but do it anyway, what the hell that's the way of the world, are a realistic person 5.) You do it, no problem - that's the way it works - are a pragmatic person I - E (introvert (me) - extrovert(others) Ancient mystic systems separate the instinctive center, (called the moving center) and emotions perceived as thoughts. Instinctive messages are perceived as intuitions and are different from passions, desires, wants, needs, and attachments to social consensus. The Jungian system which became the Myers- Briggs types includes four dimensions - S - N (Sensing, concrete, proof by senses step-by-step vs. intuition, reflective inter guidance system, sense of wholes), T- F (thinking abstract logical, expert vs. Feeling, experience, personal, relationships and attachments), J - P (Judgmental, literal, traditional vs. perceptions, instinctive, independent), E - I (extrovert - introvert ) The American tradition (ESTJ) is on the right the oriental (Japanese) on the right. The protestant business and mechanical tradition is on the right the oriental Buddhist (Japanese) on the left, INFP (Loyal, but need to know you - do not care to lead, sensitive, shun disagreements ) Count score (sum of the number of the answers) score of 26+ = new right score of 20 - 25 = old right score of 14 - 19 = silent liberals score of less than 14 = old liberals There are three dimensions to political illusions. The need for order, emotional and security needs and intuition of images. If it doesn't make sense and there are internal contradiction - so what, this is politics, and dealing with humans not science and abstract reason. The intellectual center - liberals are "policy wonks" who believe ideas and programs can solve problems. Political fundamentalist leave it to the "inviable hand" of the market and are aware of the limits of public action. Liberals "buy" votes with others peoples money. The new right "knows" there are fixed principles and the right way. The emotional center is "nationalism" and "individualism" the fight/flight syndrome- fear and anger. If you give and inch "they" take a mile (the poor, blacks, foreigners, children, bureaucrats, politicians). We are surrounded by disorder - inferior people with bad habits. It feels good to be powerful and in control. Liberals are "do gooders" who "do good" by doing things for other people that only increases dependency. The intuitive center gives certainty that you can "know" without understanding all about the problem. It feels right, the basic instincts of the righteous must be right. Don't get confused by the facts, too much information and pondering can limit and destroy action. The man of action is sure of himself even if he can't explain the logic. This adds up to a pre-scientific, tribal attitude. The "Gods" have set down the law, mans task is to obey, feeling is better that thought, action is based on intuition of the "natural order". Elections are not about "policy" but intuitions, feelings and belief systems. The Western tradition is MIND, BODY and SOUL. The body is the center of emotional, irrational, instinctive, passionate, and troublesome feelings like sexual desires. The soul is extra- terrestrial. The mind can contact the spirit but one must be careful of subjective passions (carried away from reality). There has been an "new" mind-body movement, reconnecting ourselves to our being as a material living animal. A more useful and realistic division is instincts (perceptions and intuitions), emotional (feelings - body and mind), and thoughts (includes motives). The motive center (the horses) pull the body (emotions), driven by the mind (the driver) which carries the soul (intuitions). ************************************************************ Peter E. Tart, Ph.D. (General Sufi texts -notes at end) Reassurance: (J.S. Bach: Toccata E. Fuga) There is nothing mysterious about the practice of Hypnosis. There is nothing dangerous, threatening, or embarrassing about being hypnotized. It is a very normal type of behavior, a very normal, everyday occurrence. You will experience and understand that there are conscious and sub-conscious ways of knowing. You will experience "body-knowledge" - Knowing ourselves deeply, will create a spontaneous response leading to better self-management. This experience will help you think and feel much better. You will learn how to relax and cope with stress. You are mind - thoughts - ideas - visions - you can create a reality in your mind - a world that really exists and worlds that only exist in your imagination. In the story the thinking-self is symbolized by the stage coach driver. The mind sits high up on the front of the stage-coach and drives with reins and whip. You are also a physical being, a body - the brain is only one organ of your body - the body is symbolized by the stage-coach itself- the body can feel, sense and be aware of knowledge and information different from the brain. We call this intuition, sense perception, "body-knowledge". You have feeling, passions, needs, desires, fears and hopes that arise out of your body, guts, heart, brain-stem, vitals, glands, your chemical and electrical energy - These are the horses that pull the stage coach - the life force. You will become aware of your "life force". The passions speak to you in dreams - in the language of images - listen to your dreams. You are the Spirit - the master of the stage-coach - the owner and passenger. You will get to know your spirit. You will sense the spirit in the body, the spirit in our thoughts and the brain, and contact, release and acknowledge the hidden spirit in your feeling, passions, needs, wants, fears, hopes and desires that are part of all of us. You will know what it is to be fully human. We call the spirit "love", we call the spirit "compassion", we call the spirit "reunion", we call the spirit "certainty" and we call the spirit "higher knowledge". You will experience how momentous and valuable it is to integrate the passions and feelings, the body, the mind and spirit. You will experience integration - being a complete and worthwhile person - the angel that your are, the prefect creation of a loving God. This simple exercise will help you to observe and understand your own feeling, thoughts, intuitions, character, and gain control of your own life by integration of pieces - mind - body - feeling and soul into a complete and miraculous you. The experience is more of a meditation and relaxation exercise than a deep hypnotic sleep. When you let yourself relax and listen to the meditation, the music - there are many benefits. When you allow yourself to let go, you may pass into a safe hypnotic sleep. This would be not only safe but wonderful. Motivation: (CHANTS side a: introits, communions, hymn, alleluia) You are a seeker after the light, you will experience enlightment. You will get in touch with all of your being - mind body and soul. WHAT CAN WE DO? Get rid of the illusion of separateness between yourself and other parts of the planet--"us and them" thinking. Look to heal the wounds within yourself and others--even your enemies are part of Gaea. Connect again with Nature, walk in the wilderness, immerse your consciousness in places where She is still whole and healthy. Help others to recognize the vision of global consciousness. Promote awareness of the Earth as awareness of our very selves and of our purpose in this amazing cosmic creation story. Conduct rituals that strengthen the connection of humanand Gaean consciousness. Recycle. Pray. Give money to environmental organizations. Write letters to your newspaper. Learn to love each other and appreciate the beauty and diversity She has created. Help to bring about the critical mass that can carry us on to global awakening. *Wake up!* Suggest that we begin to think of ourselves as "Gaeans," a word that further transcends our races, religions, or nationalities. As Gaeans we can join together in this global conspiracy to awaken our Mother and thank her for the miraculous gift of life she gives us. Humanity stands on the brink of a quantum leap in evolution. The effects of a global change in consciousness are truly cosmic, shrinking by comparison the fall of the Berlin Wall, the end of the Cold War, and the advent of computers. We have an enormous opportunity if we can recognize it before we destroy our chance. The Gaean Conspiracy is based on the belief that planetary awakening will occur through the mutual recognition and coordination of _all_ our major systems; from individuals and families to cities and continents; from politics and economics to religion and science. "The environment must be the central organizing principle for civilization."As we balance our mechanistic models by integrating them with spiritual and biological models, we make the first steps in the transformation. This process extends beyond our lifetime. For this reason, it is difficult for us to conceive and implement it . But if _homo sapiens_ is indeed the animal privileged to point the arrow [as Teilhard wrote] let us reflect deeply upon its direction." Rupert Sheldrake:"As soon as we allow ourselves to think of the world as alive, we recognize that a part of us knew this all along. It is like emerging from winter into spring. We can begin to reconnect our mental life with our own direct intuitive experiences with nature. We can participate in the spirits of sacred places and times. We can see that we have much to learn from traditional societies who have never lost their sense of communication with the living world around them. And we can began to develop a richer understanding of human nature, shaped by tradition and collective memory, linked to the earth and the heavens, related to all forms of life, and consciously open to the creative power expressed in all evolution. We are reborn into a living world." You have become a calm focused person. People will want to be with you. People will love you. You will know true intimacy - love and union, mind body and spirit. Some Official Orders of Sufis may disapprove of that equation, but I don't mind... of course, I don't mind if by "muslim" you mean "servant of GOD" (that's what the non-capitalized word in Arabic means). That's becuz I identify with ALL (or NO) "orders" or "denominations" (if "mystic" or "sufi" is used in an exclusive way, it's not my way)! My friend & mentor, Hasan Askari, is the "Sufi" (or even "beyond-Sufism") Teacher/Author/Seer whom I would 1st recommend to you. Would you like his address? (not on Internet) You should be aware of Idries Shah (Is he still alive? Last I knew he lived mostly in London-?). The best-known Sufi in U.S. is surely Pir Vilayat Khan, whom I heard speak at the Parliament of W. Rs. Another order quite wide-spread is the Nimatullahi Sufi Order, whose magazine, _Sufi - A Journal of Sufism_, I got a copy of in 1991. It gives 9 U.S. Centers' addresses. 1= 306 West 11th Street, New York, N.Y. 10014. I myself am like Dr. Askari in being one who "travels in the Wilderness between the Cities of Religions." My book, _Seeking Communion_ is sufist, taoist, Omaha Indian... ++---! Your Humble Servant, Steven ("Sufi") Marsh ************************************************************ Peter E. You will improve your relationships with yourself and others. You will be successful in the tasks of life. This session will create feelings of pleasure, joy, and over all well being. You will become a calm and relaxed person - You will be rejuvenated in body sensations, you will see more clearly, you will have clear and focused thinking. You will experience delight in thoughts, feelings, and in your healthy body, you will be joyful of spirit, you will be full of energy, you will have clear goals, you will experience past self-destructive behavior and how to let it go; you will think clearly and with strength of mind and character. You will release your energy that has been tied up in internalized feeling of guilt, shame, blame, in wasted effort of accusing others and yourself. You will be able to forgive others, and yourself. You will identify the true sources and the cause of your problems and pain. You will become aware of negative feeling of shame, fear - but you will allow yourself to replace these negative feeling by positive feeling of love, trust - security - certainty - patience - inspiration - and true knowledge. You will have compassion for yourself and others. You will become a calm focused person. People will want to be with you. People will love you. You will know true intimacy - love and union, mind body and spirit. (3 minutes) TARGET: The fixation point: (TV with white noise) I will make "suggestions" - you will listen to my voice and let yourself respond freely. Askari in being one who "travels in the Wilderness between the Cities of Religions." Re: Evolution vs the Islamic view, and the quote attributed to Hazrat Inayat Khan...Mevlana Jelaleddin Rumi of Balkh was a favorite mystic- poet of Hazrat Inayat Khan, who quoted him more than 60 times in his 12-volume Sufi Message (Barrie & Jenkins, UK). The quote alluded to was actually a poem from Rumi. Beginning with the affirmation La ilaha illa'Llah, it is not appropriate to speak of individual entities apart from Unicity, and one way to understand this poem is as a Self-description of Manifestation through progressively more com- lex life-forms allowing greater Self-knowledge and Self-expression. As Ibn al-'Arabi stated, existence/manifestation confers upon Allah modalities of experience not attainable in Absolute Undifferentiated Existence. A pity we waste this privilege as humans conferring such miserable experiences upon the One sometimes, but that is another matter. In both Rumi and Inayat Khan, one finds similar explanations or descriptions of Unicity awakening within Manifestation, and these descriptions are in turn similar to those by preceding masters, and in fact similar to descriptions from other sacred traditions because they deal with the structure of Reality itself, and not human ideations about it. Very briefly, these "stages" could be described as: nafs-i nabatiyya - mineral, absolutely passive nafs-i hayawaniyya - vegetative, nutrient-transmutative nafs-i ammara - self-serving behavior, often attributed to instinctive urges nafs-i lawwama - awareness of behavior, awareness of possibility of self-control nafs-i mulhama - development of observing self and sense of discrimination nafs-i muta'inna/mutma'inna - demonstrated by acting in harmony with Reality As It Is, rather than as we wish it to be, marked by recognition of and submission to a greater Power than human intellect and passions nafs-i radiyya - signals effectiveness in non-personal identity and fulfillment of our human condition and capabilities through complete submission to Reality, i.e. sense of "false" identity subsumed by a real identity nafs-i mardiyya - demosntrated by absolute selfless service, i.e. accommodation of all beings as not-other nafs-i kamil/safiyya identifies a being of sublime balance in utter harmony with the Divine Presence Manifesting as He/She will. Beyond that, we would begin moving into discussion about Attributes of the Single Being, and beyond that, discussion of Supreme Reality. The basic idea is that all that is (and is not) has a single Identity. Adam and Eve can be understood to be the figurative first humans to respond to the ultimate intention in Self-manifestation, and in a prophetic sense, as the figurative first humans for whom all of creation was manifested. Re: Your inquiry about Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan. He is the older of two sons of Hazrat Inayat Khan of Baroda (d1927), and an active guide. His brother Hidayat Inayat Khan also has a teaching organization. Information about the Pir and his writings and organization can be obtained by writing to the Sufi Order Secretariat, POB 30065 Seattle Washington 98103 USA. Hazrat Inayat Khan had two daughters, one of whom was awarded a posthumous Croix de Guerre and St George Cross for Resistance activites against the Nazis in occupied France, the other is not known to be generally active in Sufi teaching affairs. May Allah ar-Rashid al-Hadi guide you to Reality, and may your path be easy and filled with love and light. (Muzaffer) Beginning at the beginning, and allowing time to play a role, is more important than compiling lists of centers and teachers. Allowing ourselves to be guided by a capable and competent teacher is essential. The process of connecting with such a being cannot be determined in advance: sincerity is the single most important factor, in my experience. -- Khadim Chishti khadim@forthd.dcl.com From tariqas-approval Tue Nov 29 11:35:49 1994 Received: by world.std.com (5.65c/Spike-2.0) id AA27890; Tue, 29 Nov 1994 11:01:51 GMT Received: from AUC-ACS.EUN.EG by world.std.com (5.65c/Spike-2.0) id AA27866; Tue, 29 Nov 1994 06:01:42 -0500 Date: Tue, 29 Nov 1994 11:35:49 GMT From: HOLDIJK@auc-acs.eun.eg To: tariqas@world.std.com Message-Id: <941129113549.618e@auc-acs.eun.eg> Subject: Gossip re Yussuf al Islam Sender: tariqas-approval@world.std.com Precedence: bulk Reply-To: tariqas@world.std.com Status: RO X-Status: B I found the gossip about Yussuf al Islam unethical and distasteful. La ilaha illa 'Llah. Muhammudun rasulu 'Llah. Haramullah --------- article begins Since recently there appeared in trna an inquiry about "a Sufi", and also I notice time from time people's comments in this newsgroup asking about sufism, I thought I would share something that I found today in my cabinet, which is an interview with Pir Vilayat that appeared in a local Chicago-suburban area monthly publication called The Monthly Aspectarian. I will post only a section of the interview, which was between the Monthly Aspectarian [TMA] and Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan [PK]: TMA: How would you describe Sufism? PK: Well it would take a lot of books to describe Sufism. TMA: The thumbnail version, then. PK: It's the "ism" part I don't like, so I'll try to speak more about the Sufis than Sufism. I know they often define this as being the mysticism of Islam. I think that it represents the convergence of a lot of currents from various religions, and I think the origin is way back prior to Islam, and even prior to Zoroastrianism. I think it is in the old Macedonian tradition of the Magi, the three wise men for example, the Magus. It takes, of course, a deep study of Sufism to retrace that origin. You know that the troops destroyed the library which had a marvelous collection of old aesthetic learning of the Macedonian tradition. But one of our Sufis was able to pick up that knowledge. We're not quite sure how much was purely Macedonian and how much knowledge he had from traces that were still underground in esoteric schools in Iran at the time. I think that the best way of defining Sufism is...we are talking about the experience of mystics who found it difficult to confine themselves to the proscriptions of religion which, for them, was intended for the masses. Whereas they needed to honor their experience. And for that reason, for example, Sufism is not really recognized in Saudi Arabia--it is considered in a derogatory way. Sometimes it had been, in the course of histories, invalidated by those in power. But I think that the only way in which Sufism, the sayings of the Sufis, were accepted was to consider they were the sayings of a mad person. So that was a very good way out of getting into difficulty. Hallaj was crucified, as you probably know. And I think today many of the things that he said are still condemned, and therefore I think it is a mistake...I think that maybe, at best, one could consider Sufism as a heresy that is not to be accepted in Islam. Although some people say the other way around, the Sufism is the real gist of Islam, and the way of how it is presented is, as my father said, they are the followers of the followers of the followers; they are not the followers of Mohammed, they are the followers of the followers of the followers. That being so, many influences came in. For example, into the corpus of Sufism, for example, Buddhism, Korasan, Christianity. It is very well possible that the word Sufi originates in a conversation between a dervish and a Mullah, and the dervish is being accused by the Mullah of wearing wool because he was supposed to follow the example of the prophet Mohammed, who wore cotton. And he said, "I'm following the example of Christ." It's a very surprising statement, and all that they knew in those days was the the Christian monks were wearing wool because they had made a vow of poverty, whereas cotton was the dress of the richer folk. And so somehow Sufism was the way of the dervish, and the word Suf means wool; so they derived the word Sufi from those who wear wool because they are following the way of poverty--of the hermits who are in the world but not of the world. Although actually, in Islam there is a saying, "There is no monasticism in Islam." So it's really at the margin. It's not really totally accepted, although many people feel that it is the cream of the Islamic gift. So there's two absolutely opposite views. TMA: As the perceived esoterics of Islam, it's not surprising that it would have predated Islam itself. Similar to the esoterics of the other systems. PK: Yes. I think that when you talk the language of the mystics we find that there is a lot of commonality between them because they're talking experience. I often organize congresses, at least I used to organize congresses of religions, and I found that each representative stayed very much into their theology and were afraid of being disloyal to their particular theology. [TMA: Or being contaminated by the others?] Or contaminated by the other ones. Well it's very under- standable because our sense of sacredness is so treasured, and our religions are a kind of form that give those who value their sacredness some kind of protection. And if that protection goes, then one doesn't know what's going to happen. And you can see the result. When religion is not observed you see what happens: terrible defilement, terrible criminality and vulgarity and so. on. For example, a friend of mine said--who's an American but he lives in Saudi Arabia--he said, "My wife can walk in the streets in Saudi Arabia at nighttime and will not be molested. But she isn't safe on the streets of New York at any time." TMA: One of the differences that I think I see between the Sufi and the other mystery schools is that the Sufi seems to live more in the physical world than the other systems. The other systems seem to be trying to get away from the world. PK: Well of course that is a generality. I think that people do have a need to get in touch with their inner being, even if they are in the world. My father does place the accent--achievement in life and also awakening in life--from awakening out of life. Samadhi is often, for example, a way of awakening to the allness in everywhere, and I call it awakening in life; awakening in the way that allness and everywhere manifests in the here and now. So it's directly oppostie. It is true that Sufism lends itself to that orientation towards existence. First of all, I must say that one of the strong powers to be found in Islam is the idea of iskala, which means "the divine nostalgia". So that the whole of creation is the fulfillment of the divine nostalgia towards manifestation and activation. And, therefore, we would be going counter to that basic impulse behind creation if we were to try to liberate ourselves from it. So that the word liberation doesn't come into the picture as far as I know, although one Sufi spoke about returning to the state in which you were before you were involved in the state of becoming--in the process of becoming.
