Date Long time ago (about 1991) By Lars Aronsson FTP lysator.liu.se (130.236.254.1) File pub/geography/README This directory contains maps and other geographic data. The numbers given for each file (like 4,236 for README) is the file size in bytes. Think of this before you start FTP-ing the larger files. There are files as large as eight megabytes in this directory. The entire directory contains 32 megabytes worth of files. Don't use more of your own disk space or of the network bandwidth than necessary. Most file groups below have separate README files with you could look at before deciding on getting the larger files. Your questions and ideas are always welcome. -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 4,236 Jun 27 README You are reading this README file right now. -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 11,859 Jun 12 csm.v12.unpackmaps3.0.tar.Z -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 9,461 Jun 9 csm.v4.wdb-ii.Z -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 26,402 Jun 10 csm.v5.mapper-db.Z -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 10,691 Jun 9 csm.v5.mapper.Z -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 1,915 Jun 9 csm.v5.savemap.nawk.Z -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 2,671 Jun 9 csu.v5.getmaps.Z From various volumes of newsgroups comp.sources.misc and comp.sources.unix, these are some minor utilities mainly for unpacking the data received in comp.mail.maps. ORIGIN: Many sites archive these newsgroups. Here are two: ftp irisa.irisa.fr, uunet.uu.net -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 3,447 Sep 15 jlp-README -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 36,868 Jun 12 jlp-software.tar.Z -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 228,383 Jun 12 jlp-usa.tar.Z -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 1,351,445 Jun 12 jlp-world.tar.Z These are two separate maps (USA and World). James L Peterson in Austin TX put them in one tar, added some software, and announced it in comp.graphics in September 1988. There is more info in the file jlp-README. The quality of the map data in jlp-world.tar are relatively poor. The wdb2- files are much more detailed and accurate. ORIGIN: ftp tik.vtt.fi cd pub get WorldMap.tar.Z (1.6 MByte) -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 114,555 Jun 12 multicsmap.tar.Z This is something old with software originally written i PL/1. ORIGIN: ftp charon.mit.edu cd pub/MulticsMap mget * (130 kByte) -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 1,431 Jun 9 reid-README -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 1,421,251 Jun 12 reid-africa.tar.Z -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 3,331,488 Jun 12 reid-asia.tar.Z -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 989,575 Jun 12 reid-europe.tar.Z -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 2,462,555 Jun 12 reid-namer.tar.Z -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 1,388,279 Jun 12 reid-samer.tar.Z -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 35,223 Jun 12 reid-software.tar.Z This is supposed to be a version of the World Databank II mentioned below. The reid-README claims Brian Reid at DECWRL made the compaction from 46 MBytes down to these 10 MBytes. There is no spec on the binary map file format except for the source code in the software tar. ORIGIN: ftp minnehaha.rhrk.uni.kl.de cd pub/graphics get WorldMap.tar.Z (10 MByte) -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 4,205 Jun 27 wdb2-README -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 8,172,285 Jun 11 wdb2-africa.tar.Z -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 5,030,297 Jun 11 wdb2-europe.tar.Z -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 7,392,004 Jun 11 wdb2-samer.tar.Z These are (some parts of) the World Databank II as compiled by USAs Central Intelligence Agency. The files contain map data for one continent each. Each map consists of three files: cil.dat - coastlines, islands, lakes bdy.dat - political land borders riv.dat - rivers Of all public domain map files, the WDB II seems to be the most detailed and accurate one. You will probably want these data, but remember the files are large. ORIGIN: ftp gatekeeper.dec.com cd /.8/graphics/data/cia-wdb (used to be pub/maps) get wdb2.tar.Z (46 MByte) -rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 794,491 Jun 9 world-factbook.Z This is the electronic edition of CIAs 1990 World Factbook. It is one big ASCII text file with data on the worlds 249 countries. ORIGIN: ftp relay.cs.toronto.edu cd doc/geography get world-factbook (2 MByte)
